Biography

Short Description

Virgin Chelidonia, also known as Saint Chelidonia of Subiaco, was a twelfth-century Italian hermitess commemorated in the Roman Martyrology. She was born in the Cicolano, a mountainous district in what is now the province of Rieti in the Lazio region of central Italy. The year of her birth is not preserved in any source of independent historical value, nor are the names of her parents or the precise village of her origin within the Cicolano recorded. Traditional notices present her as having been drawn from youth to prayer, austerity, and withdrawal from ordinary social life, and she is consistently titled a virgin in the martyrological tradition.

Seeking solitude, she left her native district and settled in the wild hill country around Subiaco, a place already famous in Christian memory as the site of Saint Benedict of Nursia’s early eremitical life in the sixth century. There she took up residence in a cave in the mountains overlooking the Aniene valley and lived as an anchoress. Her way of life is described in later local tradition as one of fasting, simplicity, and continual prayer. The Benedictine monks of Subiaco, above all those of the abbey of Santa Scolastica, supplied her with spiritual direction and the sacraments. On that account she is commonly numbered among the Benedictine hermits, although she does not appear to have lived inside a conventual enclosure as a choir nun.

According to the date retained in hagiographical calendars and in the Roman Martyrology, Chelidonia died on 13 October 1152. After her death her body was taken to the Abbey of Santa Scolastica at Subiaco, where her relics were enshrined and became an object of local devotion. A cave associated with her eremitical life continued to be visited as a holy place, and a sanctuary in the Cicolano later bore her name. The Martyrology records her on 13 October with the notice of her virginity and her connection with Subiaco, which gave her a liturgical remembrance beyond the immediate region of Rieti and Subiaco.

Little else that is strictly verifiable survives concerning her inner life, her family, or the circumstances of her vocation. No contemporary vita of independent historical value is known; later accounts rest on local tradition and on martyrological entries. She was not the subject of a modern papal canonization or beatification process in the post-Tridentine sense. Her cult rests on medieval local veneration, later reflected in the Martyrology. She remains a representative figure of the medieval Italian eremitical movement that gathered around the ancient Benedictine foundations of Subiaco.
