Biography

Short Description

Saint Cyrilla, often designated Virgin Cyrilla in later hagiographical lists, is an early Christian martyr whose memory is preserved in the Roman Martyrology on 28 October. The martyrology describes her as a virgin of Rome, the daughter of Saint Tryphonia. It states that she was baptized by a priest named Justin and that, after enduring many sufferings for the sake of Christ, she ended her life by the sword. No contemporary third-century document independently attests her existence, and the details of her story derive from later legendary passions rather than from reliable historical sources.

The narrative of Cyrilla is interwoven with the cycle of legends that grew up around Saint Lawrence, the Roman deacon martyred in the mid-third century, traditionally during the persecution of Valerian. In these accounts, Tryphonia appears as a woman of distinguished rank, sometimes even linked in later retellings to the imperial household, who was converted together with her daughter. After the death of Lawrence, Tryphonia and Cyrilla are said to have used their resources to bury martyrs and to relieve the poor. The priest Justin who baptized Cyrilla is likewise a figure from this legendary cycle rather than a historically documented cleric.

According to the same late passions, Cyrilla was eventually arrested for her faith. She is described as having undergone various torments before being beheaded. Some medieval compilations place her martyrdom in the later third century, occasionally associating it with the reign of Claudius II Gothicus or Aurelian, but these chronological assignments rest on the same legendary material and cannot be verified from contemporary evidence. Her mother Tryphonia is likewise commemorated as a saint, and the two women are sometimes mentioned together in martyrological notices.

Modern critical hagiography regards the Acts in which Cyrilla appears as historically unreliable. They belong to a large body of Roman passion literature composed or elaborated between the fifth and seventh centuries, in which historical martyrs were given elaborate family connections, conversions of high-born ladies, and dramatic trial scenes. Nevertheless, the inclusion of Cyrilla in the Roman Martyrology indicates that her cult was established in Rome at a relatively early date. She is honoured as a virgin martyr, a title that in the early Church denoted both perpetual virginity and death for the faith.

Beyond these liturgical and legendary notices, virtually nothing can be established about her date of birth, the precise circumstances of her death, her place of burial, or any special patronages. She remains one of the many obscure virgin martyrs of the city of Rome whose names survived in the calendar even after the historical details of their lives had been lost or overlaid with pious fiction. No religious order, papal or patriarchal office, or documented family beyond the legendary mother Tryphonia can be attributed to her.
