Biography

Short Description

The figure known in Christian hagiography as the Virgin Domitilla, or Saint Flavia Domitilla, belongs to the Flavian imperial house of first-century Rome. Pagan and Christian writers of antiquity mention a woman of this name who suffered under the emperor Domitian. Cassius Dio records that Domitian put to death his cousin, the consul Titus Flavius Clemens, and banished Clemens's wife Flavia Domitilla, herself a relative of the emperor, on a charge of atheism, a term frequently used by pagan authors for Christian practice. Eusebius of Caesarea, citing a writer named Bruttius, states that Flavia Domitilla, niece of the consul Flavius Clemens, was among many Christians exiled to the island of Pontia in the fifteenth year of Domitian, that is, about 95. These notices may refer to one person or to two related women; later tradition fused them. In either case they attest that Christianity had reached the highest ranks of Roman society by the last decade of the first century, and that a Flavian woman paid for her faith with exile.

Later legend, above all the Acts of Nereus and Achilleus composed several centuries after the events, recast Domitilla as a consecrated virgin. In that narrative she is the granddaughter of Vespasian or the niece of Domitian, instructed in the faith and given the veil of virginity by Pope Clement I. Betrothed against her will to a high-born pagan, she refused marriage. Her chamberlains Nereus and Achilleus, themselves converts and later martyrs, supported her resolve. Domitian then banished her to Pontia (modern Ponza), where she lived in hardship for years. Under Trajan she was brought to Terracina in Campania; there, with her foster-sisters the virgins Theodora and Euphrosyna, she was burned to death for refusing to sacrifice to the pagan gods. Historians treat the Terracina martyrdom and the consecration by Clement as pious expansions without early documentary support. The historical core remains exile for the Christian name, not a fully attested judicial burning.

The Cemetery of Domitilla on the Via Ardeatina, one of the largest catacombs of Rome, developed on property connected with the Flavian family and with a Flavia Domitilla who granted land for burial. A fourth-century basilica honouring Nereus and Achilleus rose over their tomb in that cemetery; Domitilla's own burial place is not established with the same epigraphic certainty. Her cult as virgin and martyr is nonetheless ancient in the city of Rome. The Roman Martyrology commemorated her on 7 May as virgin and martyr at Terracina, and on 12 May together with Nereus and Achilleus on the Ardeatine Way. In the calendar reform of 1969 she was dropped from the General Roman Calendar because the acts were judged legendary, while the two soldiers or chamberlains retained their feast on 12 May. Eastern churches have also kept her memory.

Beyond these points, precise biographical data are lacking. No reliable source records her year of birth, the exact place of her birth or death, or a formal canonization, which for so early a saint belongs to the pre-congregational cultus of the martyrs. She was not a member of a later religious order, nor a pope or patriarch. The title Virgin Domitilla reflects the hagiographical portrait of a woman who chose consecrated celibacy rather than the historically plausible marriage of Flavia Domitilla to Flavius Clemens, by whom the consul had sons whom Domitian once considered as heirs. Modern scholarship therefore distinguishes the sparse first-century notices from the fully developed virgin-martyr legend, while still recognizing Domitilla as a symbol of the Flavian Christians and of the catacomb that bears her name.
