Biography

Short Description

Saint Faith, known in Latin as Sancta Fides, in French as Sainte Foy, and in Spanish as Santa Fe, is the virgin martyr of Agen in Aquitaine, in what is now southwestern France. A Christian community at Agen venerated a martyr of this name from late antiquity, and her name entered the liturgical calendars of Gaul at an early date. The written Passio, however, was composed centuries after the events it claims to recount and belongs to the genre of epic martyr legend rather than to contemporary record. Traditional accounts place her death in the late third or early fourth century and often associate it with the persecutions of the Tetrarchy, but no independent source preserves a verifiable year of birth or death, and the prefect Dacian (Dacianus) who appears as her judge is a stock persecutor in several Aquitanian passions. Historians therefore accept a historical martyr of Agen named Faith while treating the narrative details of her life as legend.

According to the passio, Faith was a young girl, still a child or adolescent, of a family at Agen. Summoned to sacrifice to the pagan gods, she refused and confessed Christ before Dacian. She was tortured on a heated brazen bed or grill and finally beheaded. Later versions attach to her story the conversion and martyrdom of Saint Caprasius (Caprais) of Agen and other secondary figures. None of these episodes can be confirmed outside the hagiographical tradition; they follow the conventional pattern of the late antique passion, with interrogation, spectacular torture, steadfast confession, and capital sentence. The Roman Martyrology commemorates her on 6 October as a virgin martyr of Agen who was beheaded by order of the prefect Dacian, without assigning a year.

The history of her cult is far better documented than her life. In the ninth century the monks of the abbey of Conques in the Rouergue obtained her relics. The Translatio sanctae Fidis describes this as a furtum sacrum, a “sacred theft,” in which a monk of Conques lived undercover at Agen until he could carry off the body. Whether or not that story is literally true, the relics were at Conques by the later ninth or tenth century and became the centre of one of the principal pilgrimage cults of medieval southern France. The Romanesque abbey church of Sainte-Foy stands on the Via Podiensis of the road to Santiago de Compostela. Its golden seated reliquary, the Majesté de Sainte Foy, whose wooden core and some metalwork go back to the late ninth or tenth century, is among the most famous surviving medieval reliquary statues. In the early eleventh century Bernard of Angers compiled the Liber miraculorum sanctae Fidis, a collection of healings, punishments, and especially releases of prisoners attributed to the saint, which spread her reputation across Latin Christendom.

Saint Faith was never the object of a formal papal canonization; her cult is pre-congregational, founded on ancient local veneration and later received by the wider Church. She remains in the Roman Martyrology on 6 October. Through the Conques miracles she is invoked as a patron of pilgrims and of prisoners, and she is the titular saint of Conques itself. Her name passed into Spanish as Santa Fe and was given to churches and towns in the Iberian world and the Americas. Beyond the traditional outline—a virgin martyr of Agen, whose relics were translated to Conques and whose feast is 6 October—almost nothing about her biography can be established as historical fact. No reliable year of birth or death has been preserved, and the vivid scenes of her passion belong to legend rather than to the documentary record.
