Biography

Short Description

Saint Iphigenia, known in Latin sources as Iphigenia and in Spanish and Portuguese devotion as Santa Ifigenia or Ifigênia, is a legendary virgin saint of the apostolic age whose life is known from medieval hagiography rather than from contemporary historical records. Tradition preserved in the Golden Legend of Jacobus de Voragine and in related accounts of the missions of the apostles places her in Ethiopia in the first century as the daughter of a local king, often named Egippus. According to these narratives, the Apostle Matthew preached in Ethiopia, confronted local magicians, performed miracles, and converted the royal household. Iphigenia was baptized and thereafter chose a life of consecrated virginity, becoming the leader of a community of virgins said in some versions to number about two hundred. She thus belongs to the early Christian type of the royal convert who embraces perpetual chastity rather than to any later named religious order.

After the death of her father, a successor named Hirtacus (also rendered Hyrtacus) sought to marry her. Matthew publicly refused, declaring that Iphigenia was already the spouse of Christ and that her vow could not be broken. This defense of consecrated virginity is the dramatic core of the legend. Enraged, Hirtacus sent an assassin who killed Matthew with a sword at the altar during the liturgy, making the apostle a martyr. Iphigenia herself is not described as a martyr in the principal versions; she continued as abbess of the virgins. Divine punishment is then said to have overtaken Hirtacus, who was afflicted with disease (commonly leprosy) or whose palace was destroyed by fire from heaven, after which he died miserably. A Christian kinsman of Iphigenia, sometimes identified as her brother, then became king and reigned for many years, allowing the church to take root.

The figure cannot be verified from independent first-century sources. Modern historians treat the story as part of the legendary Acts of the Apostles that circulated in late antiquity and were popularized in the Middle Ages. Her commemoration is closely tied to that of Saint Matthew, whose feast on 21 September is the date on which she is remembered in those calendars that mention her. In later centuries, especially in the Iberian world and in Latin America, churches and places were dedicated to Santa Ifigenia and a popular cult developed, but precise facts of her birth, death, and burial are not recorded in the surviving texts. She remains in hagiographical tradition an example of royal conversion and steadfast virginity in the apostolic era.
