Biography

Short Description

Saint Julia, also known as Julia of Corsica or Julia of Carthage, is a virgin martyr whose traditional legend is set in the fifth century. According to the medieval passio that preserves her story, she was born of a Christian family of standing in Carthage in North Africa. When the Vandals under Genseric took the city in 439, she was among the captives sold into slavery and was purchased by a Syrian merchant named Eusebius. Even as a slave she persisted in prayer, fasting, and fidelity to the Christian faith and refused all participation in pagan worship.

While her master was on a trading voyage their ship put in at the northern coast of Corsica, at the site later identified with Nonza on Cape Corso. A pagan festival was under way, and local authorities demanded that Julia offer sacrifice. She refused, even when promised her freedom in exchange for apostasy. The accounts of her passion describe scourging, the tearing out of her hair, and, in some versions, the amputation of her breasts before she was crucified. She died on the cross, remaining constant in her confession of Christ. No contemporary document confirms these events; the written legend appears much later and employs familiar hagiographic motifs, so the precise years of her birth and death cannot be established.

A cult of Saint Julia nevertheless took root in Corsica at an early date. Tradition holds that her body was first buried near the place of martyrdom and later taken to the island of Gorgona. In the eighth century relics identified as hers were translated to Brescia in Lombardy and enshrined in the monastery of San Salvatore, afterward known as Santa Giulia. Devotion spread in northern Italy as well as on Corsica. She is honored as a principal patron of Corsica, a patronage formally recognized by the Holy See in 1809, and of the city of Livorno, which likewise claims a connection with her relics. Her liturgical feast is kept on 22 May. She is remembered as a model of perseverance under persecution, though the historical details of her life rest on later legendary rather than documentary sources.
