Biography

Short Description

Saint Catherine of Alexandria, commonly called the Virgin Katherine or the Great Martyr Catherine, is a Christian virgin martyr whose story became one of the most widely circulated saint-legends of the Middle Ages in both the Greek East and the Latin West. According to the later passion narratives, she was a young woman of noble or even royal birth in Alexandria in Egypt, outstanding for learning and beauty, who lived in the early fourth century during a Roman persecution associated in the texts with the emperor Maxentius (or, in some recensions, Maximinus). No contemporary fourth-century historian mentions her. The earliest substantial Greek and Latin passions belong to a much later period, generally placed from about the eighth or ninth century onward, and modern historical criticism treats her as a legendary or composite figure rather than a person whose biography can be recovered from reliable contemporary sources. The Roman Church removed her feast from the General Roman Calendar in 1969 for lack of historical evidence, later restoring it as an optional memorial; Eastern churches have continued to honor her among the Great Martyrs.

The developed legend recounts that Catherine was converted to Christianity and then publicly challenged the emperor over the worship of the gods and the persecution of Christians. She is said to have confounded a large company of pagan philosophers or rhetoricians in debate, converting them by her arguments, after which they were put to death. Refusing the emperor’s offer of marriage and remaining a consecrated virgin, she was imprisoned, visited in prison (in many versions by the empress and a military commander, who were themselves converted), and condemned to be broken on a spiked wheel. The machine is said to have shattered miraculously, injuring bystanders; she was then beheaded. Hagiographers add that milk rather than blood flowed from her neck. These episodes supplied her chief iconographic attributes—the spiked wheel, the sword, the crown, and often a book—and the popular name “Catherine wheel.”

Tradition further relates that angels carried her body to Mount Sinai. The great monastery there, originally dedicated to the Burning Bush and the Transfiguration, came in the medieval period to be known as Saint Catherine’s Monastery and to claim her relics, which became a major pilgrimage goal. Other churches in East and West also asserted possession of relics. Because the entire narrative rests on late legend rather than on documents from the age of the persecutions, no historically verified year of birth or death can be given; older pious dating that placed her martyrdom around 305 belongs to the legendary cycle, not to contemporary record.

Her cult expanded dramatically from the eleventh century, aided by Crusader and pilgrim traffic and by the inclusion of her story in collections such as the Golden Legend of Jacobus de Voragine. She was numbered among the Fourteen Holy Helpers. Universities and schools, especially the University of Paris, took her as patron of learning; she became a model of the educated Christian virgin and a frequent subject of mystery plays, panel painting, and sculpture. Joan of Arc named Saint Catherine among the saints who spoke to her. She is commemorated on 25 November in the Roman Martyrology and in most Western calendars, and on 24 or 25 November in Byzantine usage. Over centuries she has been invoked as patron of philosophers, students, unmarried women, apologists, wheelwrights, millers, and many trades and conditions associated with study or with the wheel, as well as of the city of Alexandria itself. The historical kernel of her life, if any existed, remains beyond recovery; what can be documented is the extraordinary medieval and early modern diffusion of her legend and patronage.
