Biography

Short Description

Saint Lioba, also known as Leoba or Leofgyth, was an eighth-century Anglo-Saxon Benedictine nun, abbess, and missionary. She was born in the kingdom of Wessex in Britain to noble Christian parents named Dynne and Aebbe. Her ninth-century biographer, Rudolf of Fulda, records that before Lioba’s birth her mother dreamed of a church bell sounding from her bosom, a vision interpreted as meaning that she would bear a daughter consecrated to God whose teaching would resound widely. In keeping with a parental vow, the child was given to the monastery of Wimborne in Dorset, a double house then governed by Abbess Tetta. At Wimborne Lioba received an unusually thorough education for a woman of her time, studying the Scriptures, patristic writings, ecclesiastical law, and letters, and she became noted for learning, fasting, and regularity of life.

When Saint Boniface, a kinsman of Lioba who was organizing the church among the Germans, asked the English monasteries for women who could teach and form religious communities, Abbess Tetta sent Lioba with a company of nuns to the Continent, an event generally placed in the 740s. Boniface established her as abbess of the monastery he founded at Tauberbischofsheim on the River Tauber in Franconia. From that house she directed the training of nuns, oversaw other foundations, and acquired a reputation for wisdom that, according to Rudolf, led bishops and even members of the Frankish court to seek her counsel. She is portrayed as combining strict monastic discipline with kindness and as remaining devoted to study throughout her life.

Lioba’s spiritual friendship with Boniface was particularly close. He corresponded with her, valued her advice, and, before departing on the missionary journey to Frisia in which he was martyred in 754, is said to have requested that she eventually be buried near him at the abbey of Fulda so that they might share the same place of rest. In later life Lioba resigned the active rule of Tauberbischofsheim and lived at a smaller community at Schornsheim near Mainz. She died there on 28 September 782. Her body was taken to Fulda and buried in the abbey church in proximity to Boniface, an unusual distinction for a woman in a male monastery.

A liturgical cult of Lioba developed at Fulda. About 836 the monk Rudolf composed her Life at the request of Abbot Hrabanus Maurus, drawing on the memories of nuns who had known her. She is commemorated on 28 September and is remembered as one of the foremost women of the Anglo-Saxon mission to Germany and as a model of Benedictine learning and abbatial leadership in the early medieval church.
