Biography

Short Description

Lutgard of Tongeren, also known as Lutgardis of Aywières and often styled Virgin Lutgard in hagiographical sources, was a thirteenth-century Cistercian nun and mystic of the Low Countries. She was born in 1182 at Tongeren in the County of Loon, in what is now Belgian Limburg, into a bourgeois family. Her principal biographer, the Dominican Thomas of Cantimpré, who knew her and wrote her Life soon after her death, records that when she was about twelve her father lost the dowry intended for her marriage through a commercial failure. She was therefore placed in the Benedictine convent of Saint Catherine near Sint-Truiden. At first she lived there without a deep religious vocation and continued to receive worldly visitors. A conversion followed a vision in which Christ appeared and showed her his wounds; thereafter she embraced the monastic life and made profession as a Benedictine nun.

In the years that followed she became known for mystical experiences. She is among the earliest figures in Western Christianity reported to have received the stigmata. Thomas of Cantimpré describes visions, levitations, and a mystical exchange of hearts with Christ, a motif later associated with devotion to the Sacred Heart. Although she had little formal Latin, she was said to understand the Psalms and the liturgy through infused knowledge. Seeking a stricter observance, she obtained permission around 1206 to leave the Benedictines and enter the Cistercian community of Aywières in French-speaking Brabant. She herself spoke only Flemish; the language barrier, which she accepted as a form of exile and humility, lasted for the rest of her life. At Aywières she lived for some four decades as a choir nun and refused election as abbess.

In her later years Lutgard became blind, a condition that, according to her biographer, lasted about eleven years. She continued a life of prayer, penance, and intercession, and was credited by her community with prophecies and miracles of healing. She died at Aywières on 16 June 1246. Thomas of Cantimpré composed the Vita Lutgardis shortly afterward, drawing on the testimony of the nuns and on his own acquaintance with her. The text became an important witness to female mysticism in the thirteenth-century Low Countries.

Veneration of Lutgard spread in the Cistercian order and in the dioceses of Liège and Cambrai. She is commemorated on 16 June. Later Catholic devotion associated her with the Sacred Heart because of the heart-exchange motif in her visions, though that cult developed more fully in later centuries. She is invoked as a patron of the blind, of people with physical disabilities, of childbirth, and of Flanders. She was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type; her cult rests on long-standing liturgical and popular veneration. Relics associated with her were kept at Aywières until the French Revolutionary period, after which some were translated elsewhere in the region.
