Biography

Short Description

Saint Marina, known in Eastern Christianity as the Great Martyr Marina of Antioch and in the Latin West most often as Saint Margaret of Antioch, is a virgin martyr whose biography survives only in legendary form. Greek, Latin, Coptic, and later vernacular passions describe her as a young woman from Antioch of Pisidia in Asia Minor, daughter of a pagan priest. After her mother’s death she was placed in the care of a Christian nurse and accepted baptism. When her father discovered her conversion he is said to have cast her out. The stories locate her witness during the imperial persecutions of the later third or early fourth century, but they supply no dates or officials that can be corroborated from contemporary records, and modern historians do not treat the narrative as a reliable historical account of a particular trial.

According to the received legend, a Roman prefect—commonly named Olybrius—desired to marry her. Her refusal, together with her open confession of Christ, led to arrest and a succession of tortures. Later medieval versions, especially those popular in Western Europe, inserted the episode of a dragon or demon that swallowed her in her cell; she emerged unharmed after signing herself with the cross. That scene, though already judged unhistorical in late antiquity, became the dominant image in her iconography. Pope Gelasius I, at the close of the fifth century, included her acts among writings not to be received as authentic. The legend ends with her beheading, after which, the texts claim, many spectators were converted.

Despite the apocryphal character of the written passion, liturgical commemoration of Marina/Margaret is securely attested from the early Middle Ages. The Eastern Orthodox and Byzantine Catholic churches keep her feast on 17 July; Coptic synaxaria honour her on 23 Epip. In the medieval West she was identified with Margaret, typically celebrated on 20 July, and was numbered among the Fourteen Holy Helpers. Churches, chapels, and monasteries under her name appear across the eastern Mediterranean, Egypt, the Balkans, and Latin Europe. Relics attributed to her have been claimed by various Italian and other churches, though none of these claims can be verified archaeologically as belonging to a fourth-century martyr of Antioch.

In art she is usually shown as a youthful woman with the palm of martyrdom or a cross, often accompanied by a dragon at her feet or issuing from its mouth, a formula that fused the Eastern Marina with the Western Margaret. She became a popular intercessor for women in childbirth, for nurses, for the dying, and for those afflicted with kidney disease, and she was invoked by peasants and by people in exile. Because no independent evidence of her life or death survives, the historically recoverable fact is the diffusion of her cult rather than a reconstructable biography. That cult, crossing Greek, Coptic, Slavic, and Latin traditions, has kept the name of the virgin Marina in the calendars of the Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and Roman Catholic Churches down to the present.
