Biography
Saint Patricia, known in Italian as Santa Patrizia and sometimes called Patricia of Constantinople, is a virgin saint of the Catholic Church whose cult is centered in Naples. Hagiographical accounts describe her as a member of a noble or imperial family of Constantinople in the Eastern Roman Empire. Traditions concerning the period in which she lived are not uniform. An older strand of the legend associates her with the fourth century and with Pope Liberius, while the tradition that became established in Naples places her in the seventh century and makes her a relative of the Emperor Constans II. No contemporary historical document confirms either dating, and modern historians regard the biography as legendary.
According to the received story, Patricia resolved to remain a virgin consecrated to God and therefore refused an arranged marriage that her family intended for her. After the death of her father she distributed her possessions to the poor and left Constantinople. She is said to have gone first to Rome, where she received the veil of a consecrated virgin. Later she embarked on a sea voyage. A storm, or in some versions her own choice, brought her to the Bay of Naples. She disembarked and settled in the region, living in prayer, fasting, and works of charity.
Patricia died in Naples. The date commonly given in later sources is around the year 665, though this rests on tradition rather than on verifiable records. Her body was buried locally and in time became the object of public veneration. In the later Middle Ages her relics were transferred to the Benedictine monastery of San Gregorio Armeno in the historic center of Naples, where they are still preserved and exposed for veneration. A vial containing what is believed to be her blood is kept among the relics; according to local belief the blood liquefies on certain occasions, a phenomenon that has been compared to the more famous liquefaction of the blood of Saint Januarius.
The Roman Martyrology commemorates Saint Patricia on 25 August. She is honored as a co-patroness of the city of Naples. Popular devotion in Naples has long associated her with young women seeking a husband, who visit her shrine to pray for that intention. The historical figure behind the legend cannot be reconstructed with certainty, yet the cult of the Virgin Patricia has been an enduring part of Neapolitan religious life for many centuries and continues to the present day.
