Biography

Short Description

Saint Petronilla (also Petronella) is an early Roman virgin saint whose historical life is known only in outline and is heavily overlaid by later legend. She is commemorated by the Church of Rome as a virgin, and in some strands of tradition as a martyr. Archaeological and liturgical evidence associates her with the Catacomb of Domitilla on the Via Ardeatina, a cemetery linked to the Christian Flavians. A fresco in that catacomb, dating from about the fourth century, depicts a figure identified as Petronilla introducing a deceased woman named Veneranda into paradise, which shows that her cult was already established in Rome by late antiquity. She is absent from the Depositio martyrum of 354, but the Martyrologium Hieronymianum records on 31 May the burial of Petronilla, virgin, at Rome, confirming a feast by the fifth or sixth century.

The principal narrative of her life is the legendary Latin Acts of Saints Nereus and Achilleus, a text of the fifth or sixth century. In that account Petronilla is presented as the daughter of the Apostle Peter, who had healed her of a debilitating illness. A pagan count named Flaccus sought to marry her; she obtained a delay of three days, devoted the time to fasting and prayer, and died at the end of the third day, thus preserving her virginity. The identification of Petronilla as Peter's physical daughter is not supported by the New Testament or by any first-century source and is generally rejected by historians. It likely arose from the resemblance of her name to Petrus and from her depiction in Peter's company in catacomb art. Whether she died in the first century or in a later persecution, and whether her death was by natural causes after fasting or by martyrdom, cannot be determined from reliable evidence. No year of birth or death is recorded in early calendars or inscriptions.

In the eighth century her relics were the object of a major translation that reshaped her cult. Pope Paul I (reigned 757–767) removed them from the Catacomb of Domitilla and placed them in a late antique imperial mausoleum attached to the south side of Old St. Peter's Basilica, the mausoleum of the emperor Honorius, thereafter called the Chapel of Saint Petronilla. The translation occurred in the context of the alliance between the papacy and the Frankish kings, especially Pepin the Short and his successors. Petronilla was adopted as a heavenly patroness of the Frankish monarchy; French royalty maintained a special relationship with her altar, and the chapel functioned for centuries as the national chapel of France at the Vatican. When New St. Peter's was built in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, an altar of Saint Petronilla was provided in the basilica, and her relics continued to be venerated there.

Petronilla is uniformly described in the liturgical and hagiographical tradition as a virgin who refused marriage; no spouse or children are attributed to her in any source. She held no clerical or monastic office in the later canonical sense and belonged to no religious order. Her feast day is 31 May. Because of the Frankish and French connection she is counted among the patrons of France and of the French royal house, including the Dauphins. Popular devotion, drawing on the legend of her healing and her three days of illness, has also invoked her against fever. She was never canonized according to the formal procedures of the later Middle Ages or the modern Congregation of Rites; her cult is of great antiquity and was received by the Roman Church from the early medieval period.
