Biography

Short Description

Saint Potamiaena, also known as Potamiana, Potamiaina, or Potamicena, was a Christian virgin and martyr of Alexandria in Roman Egypt who suffered in the persecution under the emperor Septimius Severus in the early third century. The principal ancient narrative of her death is found in the sixth book of the Ecclesiastical History of Eusebius of Caesarea, who drew on Alexandrian tradition connected with the circle of Origen. Eusebius ranks her among the most celebrated of the many Christians put to death at Alexandria in that persecution. She is portrayed as a young woman of striking beauty and of notable purity of soul and body, living in slavery in a pagan household. Her mother Marcella is recorded as having been martyred in the same wave of violence.

According to Eusebius, Potamiaena’s master attempted to force her into a sexual relationship. She refused on account of her Christian faith and her resolve to remain a virgin. The master then denounced her to the authorities as a Christian. She was brought before the prefect of Egypt, named Aquila in the account. After she had undergone severe tortures without denying her faith, the magistrate threatened to deliver her to gladiators to be sexually abused. She answered with a rebuke, and was thereupon condemned to death. Her execution was carried out by the gradual pouring of boiling pitch over her body, beginning at the feet and rising to the head, until she expired.

A soldier named Basilides, assigned to escort her to the place of execution, kept the crowd from insulting and assaulting her and treated her with a degree of respect. In return she promised to remember him before God after her death. Eusebius reports that three days later she appeared to Basilides in a vision, placed a crown on his head, and told him that she had obtained her petition. Basilides then declared himself a Christian, was imprisoned, and was shortly afterward beheaded. Other Christians of Alexandria, including some associated with Origen, also suffered in the same persecution.

Veneration of Potamiaena began early in Egypt and was received in both Eastern and Western churches. The Roman Martyrology commemorates her together with Basilides on 28 June. Byzantine and other Eastern calendars commonly keep her feast on 7 June, sometimes jointly with her mother Marcella. Later writers such as Palladius, in the Lausiac History, preserve related stories of a virgin named Potamiaena, which may represent the same martyr or a fusion of Alexandrian traditions. No reliable source records the year or place of her birth, the circumstances of her family beyond her mother’s name, or the site of her burial. She belongs to the number of saints honored by ancient liturgical cult rather than by a later formal process of canonization. She held no ecclesiastical office and did not belong to a religious order in the later monastic sense.
