Biography

Short Description

Saint Praxedes (also Praxedis, Italian Prassede) is a Roman virgin saint whose cult is bound to the ancient titular church of Santa Prassede on the Esquiline Hill in Rome. No contemporary second-century documentation of her life survives. Knowledge of her rests on later hagiography, above all the legendary Acts of Saints Pudentiana and Praxedes, generally thought to have been composed centuries after the age they purport to describe, and on the early existence of a Christian titulus bearing her name. The Roman Martyrology commemorates her on 21 July as a virgin who persevered in prayer, watching, and works of mercy and was buried near her sister Pudentiana on the Via Salaria. She was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type; her cult is of the ancient, pre-congregational kind.

According to the traditional narrative, Praxedes was the daughter of a Roman senator named Pudens—sometimes identified with the Pudens named in the Second Letter to Timothy—and the sister of Saint Pudentiana (Potentiana). Later legend also assigned them brothers named Novatus and Timotheus and occasionally named their mother Claudia, and it connected the household with the apostle Peter. After their father’s death the sisters are said to have used their wealth to aid persecuted Christians: giving alms, sheltering the faithful, and burying martyrs. The story is usually set in the second century, in the reign of Antoninus Pius or Marcus Aurelius. Pudentiana is described as dying young. Praxedes continued the same works and, in the legend, asked Pope Pius I to establish a baptistery in family property, sometimes identified with the baths of Novatus. She is uniformly presented as a consecrated virgin, not as a member of any later religious order, and is not recorded as having married or had children.

The same accounts relate that she died worn out by labour, grief, and prayer rather than by public execution, and that she was laid to rest beside her sister on the Via Salaria. In the early ninth century Pope Paschal I translated remains associated with Praxedes and other martyrs into the rebuilt intramural basilica of Santa Prassede, which he adorned with mosaics that still survive. That church became the principal centre of her cult and a stational church of Rome. Medieval and later art typically shows her as a young woman with a sponge or vessel (alluding to gathering the blood of martyrs), or with palm and crown.

Modern historians treat the second-century family romance as largely legendary. The titulus Praxedis is attested by the late fifth century, and the names Praxedes and Pudentiana may have arisen as dedications of early Roman house-churches rather than as biographies that can be verified in detail. Veneration of Praxedes as a virgin of the Roman Church is nonetheless ancient. She remains in the Martyrology, though her feast was removed from the General Roman Calendar in the reform of 1969. No comprehensive list of later patronages of places, professions, illnesses, or groups is firmly attached to her in the major liturgical and hagiographical sources.
