Biography

Short Description

Saint Pudentiana, also known in some sources as Potentiana, is a Christian virgin commemorated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church. Her story is set in Rome in the second century, though the principal narrative of her life, the Acts of Saints Pudentiana and Praxedes, was composed centuries later, probably in the sixth century, and is not regarded by historians as a reliable historical document. According to that tradition she was the daughter of a Roman senator named Pudens, who has been identified with the Pudens greeted by Saint Paul in the Second Letter to Timothy. Legend further holds that the household of Pudens received Saint Peter in Rome. Pudentiana is said to have had a sister, Saint Praxedes, and brothers named Novatus and Timotheus.

The traditional account relates that after their father's death the two sisters devoted their lives and their inheritance to the service of the Christian community in Rome. They are described as having given alms to the poor, sheltered persecuted believers, and buried the bodies of martyrs with care. Their family residence on the Vicus Patricius on the Esquiline Hill is said to have been used for Christian worship and to have become the titulus Pudentis, the ancestor of the present church of Santa Pudenziana. That church is among the oldest in Rome and preserves a celebrated mosaic of the late fourth or early fifth century. Scholars have noted that the personal name Pudentiana may have been derived from the title of the church of Pudens rather than the reverse, and that a historical virgin of that name cannot be independently confirmed.

Hagiographical texts state that Pudentiana died at the age of sixteen during the reign of Emperor Antoninus Pius in the mid-second century and that she was buried in the Catacomb of Priscilla on the Via Salaria. Praxedes is said to have outlived her and to have continued similar works of mercy. Pudentiana appears in the Martyrologium Hieronymianum and is listed in the Roman Martyrology on 19 May, with a brief notice of her charity and her burial of martyrs. Because the Acts are legendary, her feast was removed from the General Roman Calendar in the reform of 1969, although her name remains in the Martyrology and her cult continues, especially in connection with the Roman church that bears her name.

Devotion to Saint Pudentiana extended beyond Italy. Under the Spanish form of her name, Santa Potenciana, she was invoked as a patron saint of the Philippines during the colonial period. Relics associated with her have been venerated in Santa Pudenziana in Rome. Whether or not a single historical figure corresponding to the legend existed, the tradition of Pudentiana belongs to the early Roman memory of Christian virgins and householders who supported the Church through hospitality, burial of the dead, and the conversion of domestic space into places of worship in the age of the martyrs.
