Biography

Short Description

Saint Romana, referred to as the Virgin Romana in hagiographical sources, is a little-known saint of the early Roman Church. Traditional accounts place her in the fourth century in the city of Rome. According to the Roman Martyrology, she was baptized by Pope Saint Sylvester I, whose pontificate lasted from 314 until 335. This period followed the Edict of Milan and marked the transition of Christianity from a persecuted faith to one favored by the imperial authorities. Beyond this association with the pope, no details of her family background, social status, or early life have been preserved in reliable historical records.

Following her baptism, Romana is described as having dedicated herself to a life of virginity and asceticism. She retired to a cave on the banks of the Tiber River, living there as a hermit until her death. Such eremitical vocations, though less documented in Italy than in the Eastern deserts, were part of the broader ascetic movement of the fourth century. She is said to have died in the odor of sanctity in this secluded dwelling. The brevity of the surviving notices suggests that her story was transmitted through local Roman tradition rather than through extensive vitae or contemporary chronicles.

Very little can be established with certainty about Saint Romana. No exact years of birth or death are recorded in early sources, and later attributions of a death date around 324 appear to be conjectural attempts to situate her within Sylvester's lifetime. She is not listed among the martyrs, indicating that her holiness was that of a confessor and consecrated virgin rather than one who died for the faith during persecution. Her liturgical commemoration occurs on 23 February. No specific patronages of places, professions, or causes are firmly attached to her name in standard hagiographical compilations.

The veneration of obscure virgin saints such as Romana reflects the piety of late antique and medieval Rome, where numerous local holy women were remembered in the calendar even when biographical data had been lost. Her example belongs to the tradition of consecrated virgins who, after the peace of the Church, chose hidden lives of prayer in or near the city. No religious order can be assigned to her, as organized monasticism in the Benedictine form developed later. She remains an example of the many early saints whose cults rest primarily on martyrological mention rather than detailed historical documentation.
