Biography

Short Description

Saint Rosalia, known in Italian as Santa Rosalia and in Sicilian as Santa Rusulia, and popularly called la Santuzza (the Little Saint), is venerated as a virgin hermit of twelfth-century Sicily and as the principal patron of Palermo. Later medieval and early modern tradition places her birth about 1130 in Palermo, then capital of the Norman Kingdom of Sicily, in a noble family of Norman origin said to claim descent from Charlemagne. Her father is named in these accounts as Sinibald, lord of the Roses and of Quisquina. Almost nothing about her life can be confirmed from contemporary twelfth-century documents; the written legend took shape centuries after her death, especially in the seventeenth century. What the tradition consistently affirms is that she refused marriage, left her family, and embraced a hidden life of prayer as a consecrated virgin.

According to the received story, Rosalia first withdrew to a cave in the mountainous interior near Santo Stefano Quisquina and later settled in a grotto on Monte Pellegrino, the isolated mountain overlooking Palermo and the sea. There she lived as an anchoress or hermit, practicing fasting, vigil, and contemplation. An inscription associated with the cave, publicized after 1624, presents her as having fled the world for love of Christ. She is not recorded as having belonged to a formal religious order, though Sicily’s mix of Latin and Greek monasticism forms the background of her eremitical vocation. Traditional dates place her death in the cave around 1160, commemorated on 4 September, after which her memory remained largely local and dim for some four and a half centuries. There is no tradition of a husband or of children.

The turning point of her cult came in 1624, when Palermo was stricken by plague. In that year bones were discovered in a cave on Monte Pellegrino, together with a crucifix and inscriptions taken to identify the remains as those of Rosalia. The relics were borne in procession through the city; the epidemic abated, and the populace and civic authorities acclaimed her as the deliverer of Palermo. Archbishop Giannettino Doria supported the identification. In 1630 her name was inserted in the Roman Martyrology under Pope Urban VIII, which gave the cult universal liturgical standing without a modern process of formal canonization. Her relics are kept in the Cathedral of Palermo; the cave on Monte Pellegrino became a major sanctuary and pilgrimage site.

Liturgically she is commemorated on 4 September, the traditional day of her death. In Palermo a great civic festival, the Festino di Santa Rosalia, is celebrated on 14 and 15 July in memory of the translation of the relics and the end of the plague. She is patron of Palermo and is widely invoked against pestilence. Devotion spread through Sicily and, with Sicilian migration, to the Americas; she is also patron of El Hatillo, Zuata, and Anzoátegui in Venezuela, and of Camargo in Chihuahua. In art she appears as a young woman in hermit’s dress, often crowned with roses, holding a crucifix, a skull, or a book, and sometimes shown in her mountain cave. The combination of a scant contemporary record and a powerful early modern civic cult makes her one of the most characteristic saints of Baroque Sicily: historically elusive, yet central to the religious identity of Palermo.
