Biography

Short Description

Saint Rose of Lima, born Isabel Flores de Oliva, is the figure most commonly intended by the designation Virgin Rose in Catholic hagiography. She was born on 20 April 1586 in Lima, capital of the Spanish Viceroyalty of Peru, the daughter of Gaspar Flores, a Spanish harquebusier, and María de Oliva. One of eleven children in a family of limited means, she was noted from childhood for her beauty. Tradition holds that a servant saw her infant face transfigured as a rose, after which she was called Rosa; Archbishop Turibius of Mogrovejo confirmed her under that name. Even as a girl she built a hermitage in the family garden and began the fasting and night vigils that would mark her entire life.

Determined to remain a virgin and to imitate Saint Catherine of Siena, Rose rejected the marriages her parents sought for her. She cut her hair, scarred her face with pepper and lye, and later wore a spiked silver crown hidden under a garland of roses. After years of domestic conflict she received permission to become a Dominican tertiary about 1606, taking the white habit and black veil of the Third Order of Saint Dominic while continuing to live at home. She withdrew to a small hut in the garden, where she combined hours of prayer and severe bodily mortification with embroidery and flower-growing, the sale of which helped support her impoverished family.

Rose also turned a room of the house into a refuge for the sick poor, especially indigenous people and enslaved Africans of Lima. She was credited with mystical experiences, including visions and prolonged ecstasies, as well as long stretches of spiritual desolation. She was acquainted with the Dominican community of the city and with the lay brother Martin de Porres, later canonized. The intensity of her penances—hair shirts, a bed of rough wood or broken crockery, and extreme fasting—ruined her health. After a protracted illness she died on 24 August 1617, aged thirty-one. Immense crowds attended her funeral, and she was buried in the church of the Dominican convent of Santo Domingo in Lima, where her relics remain.

Public veneration began at once. Pope Clement IX beatified her in 1667, and Pope Clement X canonized her on 12 April 1671, the first canonization of a person born in the Americas. She was named principal patroness of Peru and later of Latin America and the Philippines. Gardeners, florists, embroiderers, and those mocked for their piety also claim her as patron. In the General Roman Calendar her feast is observed on 23 August.
