Biography

Short Description

Saint Scholastica, often styled Virgin Scholastica in martyrologies and liturgical books, is the sister of Saint Benedict of Nursia and the principal female figure associated with the origins of Benedictine monasticism in sixth-century Italy. Almost everything that can be said of her with any historical control derives from a single early source: Book II of the Dialogues of Pope Gregory the Great, written about 593–594, within living memory of Benedict’s disciples. Gregory states that she had been consecrated to God from her earliest infancy and that she was accustomed to visit her brother once a year. He does not call her Benedict’s twin, nor does he give dates or the names of their parents. Those details belong to later tradition, which places her birth about the year 480 at Nursia (modern Norcia) in Umbria and identifies the siblings as twins born to a family of some standing. Names such as Eutropius and Abundantia for the parents appear only in medieval legend and are not independently verified.

In the course of the sixth century she is held to have gathered a community of women under a monastic rule related to that of her brother, at a place later identified as Plombariola (Piumarola), a few miles from Monte Cassino. The arrangement allowed the two communities to remain distinct while remaining in spiritual contact. Scholastica is therefore venerated as foundress and first abbess of Benedictine nuns, even though Gregory never uses the title abbess or describes a formal foundation. The yearly meeting took place not inside Benedict’s monastery—women were not admitted—but at a house nearby, where brother and sister spent the day in prayer and discourse on the spiritual life.

Gregory’s narrative of their final meeting has shaped her cult more than any other episode. Knowing that she would not see him again in this world, Scholastica begged Benedict to stay the night so that they might talk until morning of the joys of heaven. He refused, citing the monastic obligation to return to his cell. She then clasped her hands on the table and prayed. A violent storm of rain, thunder, and lightning burst over the house, so that no one could leave. Benedict, dismayed, asked what she had done; she replied that she had asked him and he would not hear her, so she had asked her Lord and had been heard. Gregory draws the moral that she proved the stronger because she loved more. Three days afterward, Benedict, standing in his tower, beheld her soul departing in the form of a dove and ascending into heaven. He then sent for her body and laid it in the tomb at Monte Cassino that he had prepared for himself, so that death would not divide those who had been united in God.

Tradition dates her death to 10 February 543. Benedict himself is usually said to have died in 547; both dates are conventional rather than documented by contemporary records. The feast of Saint Scholastica on 10 February is ancient in the Roman and Benedictine calendars. She is invoked as patroness of Benedictine nuns and of nuns generally, of children suffering from convulsions, and against storms, rain, and lightning—the last patronage clearly suggested by Gregory’s storm miracle. Because she lived long before the development of papal canonization processes, no pope is recorded as having formally canonized or beatified her; her cult rests on the Dialogues, on liturgical commemoration, and on the continuous veneration of the Benedictine family. Her relics, originally at Monte Cassino, were later claimed in part by other churches after the vicissitudes of war and translation that affected the abbey’s treasures.
