Biography

Short Description

Saint Serapia, also called Seraphia, is venerated in the Roman tradition as a virgin martyr of the second century. The only connected account of her life is the later Passio of Saints Sabina and Serapia, a text that modern hagiographers treat as legendary rather than as a contemporary historical record. According to that narrative she was a Christian of Antioch in the Roman province of Syria. After the death of her parents she is said to have distributed her property to the poor and to have gone to Italy, where she entered the household of a wealthy Roman widow named Sabina. Through her example and instruction Sabina was converted to Christianity.

The same legendary cycle places Serapia's arrest in Rome during the reign of the Emperor Hadrian (117-138). Brought before a magistrate, she refused to sacrifice to the gods. The Acts describe an attempted sexual assault by two young men who were miraculously prevented from harming her, followed by beating with rods and beheading. Traditional Catholic sources often assign the year 119 to this martyrdom; that figure derives from the legendary Acts and is not independently confirmed. Sabina recovered the body and buried it in her family's tomb on the Aventine Hill.

The legends continue that Sabina herself was later put to death for her faith and for honouring a Christian martyr, and that she was interred beside Serapia. In the fifth century a basilica dedicated to Saint Sabina was erected on the Aventine on a site associated with their burial; Santa Sabina remains one of the most important early Christian churches in Rome. The Roman Martyrology commemorates Serapia as a virgin martyr on 3 September.

No contemporary inscription or document confirms Serapia as a distinct historical person, and the Passio employs conventional motifs of later martyr literature. Her cult is therefore inseparable from that of Sabina and from the ancient Roman church that bears Sabina's name. Within that tradition she is remembered as a consecrated virgin who chose poverty and domestic service and who died for the Christian faith in second-century Rome.
