Biography

Short Description

Saint Susanna, commonly styled the Virgin Susanna, is a Christian martyr of Rome commemorated on 11 August. She is linked with the ancient titular church of Santa Susanna on the Quirinal Hill. Almost nothing about her can be established from contemporary records. The detailed biography that later circulated in the Latin West comes from a passio that modern hagiographers treat as legendary and of comparatively late composition, probably written to explain the dedication of a Roman titulus rather than to preserve eyewitness history.

According to that later narrative, Susanna belonged to a distinguished Christian family in third-century Rome. She is described as the daughter of the priest Gabinius and as a kinswoman of Pope Caius, and in some versions as related to the imperial house of Diocletian. Having consecrated her virginity to God, she refused a politically advantageous marriage that the emperor is said to have proposed, named in the texts variously as a union with Maximian or with another court kinsman. Her refusal, her open profession of Christianity, and the conversion of members of her household are presented as the causes of her arrest.

The same passio relates that she was beheaded in her father's house after interrogation, and that other members of the family, including Gabinius, also suffered. Traditional dating places these events in the last decade of the third century, during the persecution associated with Diocletian, but the year is not independently confirmed. She is said to have been buried in the cemetery of Alexander on the Via Nomentana. Relics later identified as hers were enshrined in the church that bears her name, which stands on the site traditionally identified with the family dwelling, sometimes called ad duas domos.

Historically, an early cult of a martyr named Susanna at Rome is plausible. The church of Santa Susanna is an ancient titular church, already listed among the Roman tituli in late antiquity, and the name appears in the Martyrologium Hieronymianum. Scholars such as Hippolyte Delehaye have argued that the elaborate family connections with Pope Caius and the imperial court, together with the novelistic marriage plot, are literary inventions of a later age. The biblical story of Susanna in the Book of Daniel may also have influenced the shaping of the legend. Thus the existence of a Roman virgin martyr of this name and the antiquity of her cult can be affirmed with some confidence, while the biographical particulars remain uncertain.

In the liturgy she is honoured as a virgin martyr. The Roman Martyrology on 11 August recalls her as a noble Roman virgin, niece of Pope Caius, who suffered death for Christ after refusing marriage. Devotion has been centred on the church of Santa Susanna, which for centuries served as the national church of the United States in Rome. She was never the object of a modern process of canonization; her cult belongs to the ancient, pre-congregation veneration of martyrs. Specific widespread patronages attached to her name are not well documented in the major martyrologies and liturgical books.
