Biography

Short Description

Saint Tharsilla (also recorded as Tarsilla, Trasilla, or Thrasilla) was a consecrated virgin of sixth-century Rome and the paternal aunt of Pope Saint Gregory the Great. She belonged to a prominent Christian senatorial family: her brother Gordianus was Gregory’s father, and the family numbered Pope Saint Felix among its ancestors. With her sisters Emiliana (Aemiliana) and Gordiana she remained in the family household, following the late antique practice of consecrated virginity at home rather than in a monastery. The family residence is associated with the Caelian Hill in Rome, the same property later converted by Gregory into the monastery of Saint Andrew.

Gregory, who held these aunts in high regard, described their life in his Homilies on the Gospels. He presents Tharsilla as outstanding in prayer and austerity. According to his account she was granted a nocturnal vision in which a kinsman, Pope Felix, showed her a throne prepared for her in heaven and invited her to that dwelling. The following day she was seized with fever. She died on the vigil of the Nativity. Those who prepared her body observed the marks of long penance, especially calluses on her knees from prolonged kneeling. Gregory also relates that at the hour of death she gave sign that she saw her Saviour coming to meet her.

A few days later Tharsilla appeared to Emiliana, who had shared her manner of life, and summoned her to the heavenly feast at the coming Epiphany. Emiliana died shortly afterward, traditionally on 5 January. The third sister, Gordiana, had at first joined their devout practices but later abandoned that way of life, a fact Gregory records with regret. Beyond these family recollections preserved by Gregory, no contemporary narrative supplies further biographical detail. Precise years of birth and death are not recorded in reliable sources; she is known only to have flourished in Rome in the sixth century, during Ostrogothic and then Byzantine rule in Italy.

Veneration of Tharsilla as a saint is ancient and rests on Gregory’s testimony and on Roman liturgical tradition. The Roman Martyrology commemorates her on 24 December, the day associated with her death. She is honoured as a virgin; she belonged to no later named religious order, and no specific patronages are firmly attached to her in the historical record. Her memory survives chiefly as an example of domestic consecrated life in late antique Rome and as part of the familial holiness that Gregory set before the Church.
