Biography

Short Description

Saint Theoctiste of Lesbos, also rendered Theoktiste or Theoctistis, was a ninth-century Byzantine hermit commemorated as a virgin saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church. The principal narrative of her life is a tenth-century hagiographical text by the Byzantine official Niketas Magistros. According to that account she was born in Methymna on the island of Lesbos, then within the Byzantine Empire. Orphaned as a child, she was received into a local monastery, tonsured as a nun, and formed in the monastic life. No independent contemporary record preserves the year of her birth.

When she was eighteen, Lesbos was struck by a raid of Arab pirates based on Crete, a recurrent danger in the Aegean in that century. Theoctiste was among those taken captive. The raiders put in at the island of Paros, which had been largely abandoned because of such attacks. There she escaped into the interior and remained for thirty-five years as a solitary anchoress, living on wild plants and keeping as much of her monastic rule as isolation permitted. The hagiography states that she saw no other human being during those decades.

Late in her eremitical life a hunting party from Euboea landed on the deserted island. One hunter, separated from his companions, found Theoctiste in a cave. After her initial fear, she told him her history and asked that he return the next year with the Holy Gifts so that she might receive Communion, which she had lacked since her flight. He did so. After receiving the Eucharist she died. The hunter wished to remove her body for burial but could not lift it; he therefore took her right hand as a relic. When the story became known, others sought her remains on Paros, but her body was not found.

Her memory entered the Orthodox synaxaria, and her feast is kept on 9 November. A church dedicated to her stands on Paros. Niketas Magistros’s Life is an important specimen of middle Byzantine hagiography and a literary witness to the disruption caused by Arab naval raids in the ninth-century Aegean. Precise years of birth and death are not confirmed by sources independent of the hagiographical chronology; later tradition sometimes assigns her death to 881, but that figure is a calculation from the narrative rather than a documented date. She is remembered as a model of eremitical endurance and of fidelity to the monastic vocation in extreme solitude.
