Biography

Short Description

Theodora, known in the Latin martyrologies as the Virgin Theodora of Alexandria, is commemorated as a Christian martyr of the early fourth century. According to the Greek and Latin passions that preserve her legend, she was a young woman of Alexandria in Roman Egypt who had dedicated herself to virginity for Christ. Her death is placed in the Great Persecution under Diocletian, conventionally in 304, when edicts required sacrifice to the gods and punished refusal with imprisonment, torture, or death. Alexandria was then a major centre of both civic pagan cult and Christian life, and many trials of Christians are reported there in this period. No contemporary non-hagiographical writer, including Eusebius of Caesarea, names Theodora, and modern historians treat the narrative as a literary passion rather than a document of proven individual biography. The story elaborates a theme also found in other early Christian texts: a consecrated virgin threatened with sexual violation as a judicial penalty, then delivered by a fellow believer who shares her martyrdom.

The surviving Acts relate that Theodora was arrested and brought before a prefect, named in some recensions Eustratius or Proculus. When she refused to sacrifice, the judge did not order immediate execution but condemned her to a brothel, a penalty attested in Roman practice as a means of shaming women of status who defied authority. Theodora is depicted as praying that her chastity be preserved. A Christian named Didymus, described as a soldier, entered the place of confinement, exchanged garments with her, and enabled her to leave unrecognized. He remained in her place and was discovered. In the fuller form of the legend Theodora later returned so as not to leave her deliverer to suffer alone; both then confessed the Christian faith before the magistrate and were sentenced to beheading. The tale thus joins consecrated virginity, substitutionary rescue, and shared martyrdom.

A closely similar episode, set at Antioch and without the names Theodora and Didymus, is told by Saint Ambrose of Milan in the second book of De virginibus, composed in the late fourth century. Whether Ambrose and the Alexandrian Acts depend on a common earlier account, or whether the legend was localized independently in more than one city, remains uncertain. The names and the Alexandrian setting became standard in later martyrological tradition. The Roman Martyrology records the passion of Saint Theodora, virgin, and Saint Didymus, martyr, at Alexandria on 28 April. In the Byzantine calendar the Virgin-Martyr Theodora of Alexandria is commemorated on 5 April, sometimes together with Didymus. Their cult is therefore ancient in both East and West, though it never attained the popularity of the great universal martyrs.

No historically verified details of Theodora’s family, exact year of birth, or burial place have been preserved. She belonged to no later religious order; the title virgin in the martyrologies indicates a consecrated or at least unmarried Christian woman of the pre-monastic type familiar in the third and fourth centuries. She is not widely invoked as patron of particular places, professions, or causes. The narrative that survives is valued chiefly as a witness to early Christian ideals of virginity and to the ways in which the Church remembered those who, in the age of the persecutions, were said to have preferred death to the violation of faith or chastity. Distinction should be made between this Theodora and other saints of the same name, notably the fifth-century penitent Theodora of Alexandria (commemorated 11 September), who was a married woman and is a different figure.
