Biography

Short Description

Saint Veridiana (also spelled Verdiana) was a thirteenth-century Italian virgin and recluse whose cult has been centered on Castelfiorentino in Tuscany since the later Middle Ages. Traditional accounts place her birth in that town in 1182, in a family of noble standing that had fallen into reduced circumstances; later local tradition sometimes links her with the Attavanti. Lives of the saint describe her as marked from childhood by prayer, fasting, and care for the poor. One strand of the legend states that she entered domestic service, possibly in the household of a kinswoman, and that she gave away food intended for the family, accepting blame and hardship rather than cease her almsgiving.

As a young woman she undertook the long pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, one of the principal penitential destinations of medieval Christendom. Some versions of her life add a journey to the tombs of the apostles in Rome. After returning to Tuscany she resolved to live as an enclosed anchoress. With the consent of local clergy she was enclosed in a small cell built against the oratory of Saint Anthony the Abbot at Castelfiorentino. There she remained for approximately thirty-four years, following a life of silence, austerity, and liturgical prayer, receiving Communion through a window and giving spiritual counsel to those who sought her.

A persistent hagiographical motif, already current in the later medieval period, holds that two serpents took up residence in her cell. She is said to have fed them from her own scanty provisions and to have suffered their bites without complaint, interpreting the ordeal as a share in Christ’s Passion. The snakes became a fixed attribute in her iconography. Veridiana died in her enclosure on 1 February 1242. Devotion to her sprang up at once among the people of Castelfiorentino; her relics were preserved and a church was later erected in her honor.

Papal confirmation of her cult was granted by Pope Clement VII in 1533. She is honored on 1 February and is the patron saint of Castelfiorentino. Because contemporary documentary evidence is scarce, many particulars of her biography rest on later vitae and local tradition rather than on strictly contemporary records. Nonetheless, historians accept her as a genuine figure of the Tuscan eremitical movement of the early thirteenth century, and her shrine has remained a focus of regional piety for centuries.
