Biography

Short Description

Walburg, commonly known in Latin sources as Walburga or Walpurga and in Old English as Wealdburg, was an eighth-century Anglo-Saxon nun, abbess, and missionary, honoured as a virgin saint. She was born in the West Saxon kingdom, in the region later called Devonshire. Later medieval lives present her as the daughter of a West Saxon notable named Richard, who died at Lucca while on pilgrimage and was thereafter venerated as Saint Richard the Pilgrim, and as the sister of Willibald, bishop of Eichstätt, and Winnebald, abbot of Heidenheim. Whether every genealogical detail can be confirmed from contemporary evidence is uncertain, but the siblings’ association with the Bonifatian mission is well established in the historical record of the English mission to the Continent. As a girl she entered the monastery of Wimborne in Dorset, a house of high reputation for learning and observance, where Abbess Tetta governed a community living under the Rule of Saint Benedict. There Walburg received her education and made her monastic profession.

When Saint Boniface, a kinsman of the family and the principal organizer of the church in Hessia, Thuringia, and Bavaria, sought experienced nuns to form women’s communities and to teach, a group of sisters was sent from Wimborne. Walburg travelled to the Frankish lands in the middle of the eighth century, together with figures such as Saint Lioba of Tauberbischofsheim. After a time in Lioba’s circle she went to Heidenheim, in the Sualafeld region of what is now Bavaria, where her brother Winnebald had founded a double monastery of monks and nuns with the support of Bishop Willibald. Double monasteries, in which an abbess or abbot might have authority over both sexes living in separate enclosures, were familiar in Anglo-Saxon and some Frankish contexts. Upon Winnebald’s death, which occurred in the 760s, Walburg became abbess of Heidenheim and is described as ruling the whole community with prudence and holiness.

She died at Heidenheim on 25 February, the date kept as her feast throughout the Western church. Contemporary annals do not fix the year with complete certainty; later tradition places her death in the later 770s, with 777 and 779 both appearing in standard reference works. She was buried at her own monastery. In the ninth century her relics were translated to Eichstätt, the episcopal city of her brother Willibald, and enshrined in a church that developed into the Abbey of Saint Walburg, a Benedictine house of nuns that still exists. From the rock of her tomb a liquid known as Walburgis oil was said to flow at certain seasons; it was collected by the nuns and distributed to pilgrims as a blessing, and reports of healings attached themselves to the shrine. A further translation or feast connected with 1 May helped to associate her name with Walpurgis Night, an eve on which Christian commemoration and older seasonal customs met in German-speaking and Scandinavian lands.

Cultus spread from Bavaria into Franconia, the Rhineland, and the Low Countries. Towns such as Antwerp, Oudenaarde, Weilburg, and Zutphen claimed her as patron, as did the diocese and city of Eichstätt. She has been invoked by sailors and against hydrophobia, coughs, plague, famine, and storms. Her brothers were commemorated in early Heidenheim writing, notably by the nun Hygeburg (Hugeburc); Walburg’s own medieval vitae include a later ninth-century life by Wolfhard of Herrieden. Modern historical judgement treats her as a genuine abbess of the Bonifatian connection whose exact biography is only partly recoverable, while her long liturgical cult, the persistence of her abbey at Eichstätt, and the folk memory of Walpurgis Night have kept her among the better-known English saints of the German mission.
