Biography

Short Description

Saint Zita, often called Virgin Zita or Santa Zita of Lucca, was a thirteenth-century Italian laywoman whose reputation for holiness grew from a lifetime of ordinary domestic labor rather than from membership in a religious order or from high ecclesiastical office. She was born in the village of Monsagrati (also rendered Monte Sagrati) in the countryside near Lucca in Tuscany, to a poor and devout Christian family. Later tradition commonly places her birth in the early thirteenth century, frequently around 1212, though that year is inferred from hagiographical statements about her age rather than from a surviving contemporary birth record. At about twelve years of age she left home to enter the household of the Fatinelli family, prosperous wool and silk merchants of Lucca, and she remained in their service until her death some forty-eight years later.

In the Fatinelli house Zita performed the routine work of a maidservant: cooking, cleaning, drawing water, and looking after the needs of the family. Accounts of her life, written after her death and shaped by local devotion, describe her rising before dawn for prayer, attending daily Mass, and practicing fasting and almsgiving. Fellow servants at first mocked and mistreated her for her piety and for giving leftover food to the poor. Over many years of patience and reliable work she is said to have gained the trust of her employers and to have been placed in charge of the household. She never married and is venerated as a virgin; there is no historical evidence of a spouse or of children.

Later legend attached several miracle stories to her charity and labor. These include the claim that bread she had given to the poor was miraculously replaced in the household stores, and that water in a cold fountain became warm so that she could finish the family's washing. Such episodes belong to the traditional hagiography of Lucca rather than to independently documented events, but they illustrate how her cult interpreted ordinary service as a path of Christian perfection. She continued in the same household until the end of her life, combining domestic duty with care for the sick and the needy of the city.

Zita died in Lucca on 27 April 1272. A popular cult formed around her tomb almost at once. In the later sixteenth century her body was reported to be incorrupt and was translated to a chapel in the Basilica of San Frediano in Lucca, where it is still displayed. Pope Innocent XII confirmed her cult and canonized her in 1696. Her feast is kept on 27 April. She is invoked especially as patron of domestic servants, housemaids, and those who seek lost keys, and she is also counted among the patrons of Lucca.
