Biography

Virginia Centurione Bracelli was born in Genoa on 2 April 1587, the daughter of Giorgio Centurione, who later served as Doge of the Republic of Genoa, and Lelia Spinola. Raised in a leading aristocratic household, she showed early piety and wished to enter religious life, but her family arranged a marriage instead. On 10 December 1602 she wed Gaspare Grimaldi Bracelli, a member of another prominent Genoese family. The couple had two daughters, Lelia and Isabella. Gaspare led a worldly life and died after illness on 13 June 1607, leaving Virginia a widow at the age of twenty.

She refused subsequent proposals of remarriage, including pressure from her father, and made a private vow of chastity. After providing for her daughters’ upbringing she turned increasingly to charity among the poor of Genoa. In the mid-1620s the city suffered war, famine, and plague. In 1625 she opened her palace to abandoned children and the destitute and gathered around her a group of women dedicated to serving the needy. This community was known as the Cento Signore della Misericordia Protettrici dei Poveri di Gesù Cristo.

In 1631 she obtained a house at Monte Calvario outside the city walls, which became a refuge and the origin of the congregation later called the Sisters of Our Lady of Refuge in Mount Calvary. Virginia drew up rules, secured the support of the Archbishop of Genoa, and oversaw the growth of further houses. She was also known as a peacemaker amid Genoa’s factional conflicts and was consulted by civic and ecclesiastical authorities. Her spirituality centered on the Cross and on trust in Providence, joined to practical administration of works of mercy.

In later years she met opposition within the institution she had founded, as well as financial strain, and she gradually withdrew from active governance. She died in Genoa on 15 December 1651. Devotion to her persisted among the sisters and the people of Genoa. Pope John Paul II beatified her on 22 September 1985 and canonized her on 18 May 2003 in Saint Peter’s Square. The Church commemorates her on 15 December.
