Biography

Short Description

Saint Bona of Pisa, a twelfth- and early thirteenth-century Augustinian tertiary and pilgrim, was born in Pisa around 1156. The city was then a powerful maritime republic whose ships and merchants ranged across the Mediterranean and whose citizens were familiar with both crusading and long-distance pilgrimage. Traditional accounts of her childhood relate that her father left Pisa for the Holy Land and did not return, and that she was raised by her mother. From an early age she was described as given to prayer and to visionary experience. Later lives attribute to her childhood apparitions of Christ, of the Virgin Mary, and of Saint James the Greater, whose shrine at Compostela became the principal goal of her adult journeys. These stories, written in a hagiographical register, cannot all be verified in detail, but they reflect a consistent memory of Bona as a mystic whose vocation was formed in girlhood rather than by marriage or by enclosure in a monastery.

As a young woman she bound herself to the Augustinian family as a tertiary, living a consecrated, unmarried life while remaining in the world and in her native city. She is associated with the church of San Martino in the Kinzica district of Pisa, served by Augustinian canons. Tradition holds that she traveled to the Holy Land, in part to seek news of her father, and that she suffered hardship there before returning to Italy. Far better attested in the shape of her cult is her repeated pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. She is said to have completed the journey from Tuscany to Galicia nine times, often on foot and often as the leader of groups of Pisan pilgrims. She also went to Rome. In an age when the Compostela road was one of the great arteries of Latin Christendom, a woman who repeatedly made and guided that journey acquired a public reputation for endurance, charity, and spiritual authority. Stories of conversions, healings, and protection of travelers accumulated around her name.

Bona spent her last years in Pisa and died there on 29 May 1207. She was buried in the church of San Martino, where her relics have been kept and venerated. For centuries her cult remained essentially local, centered on Pisa and on those who traveled. In the modern period she has been invoked more widely as a patron of travelers and pilgrims, and in particular of tour guides, flight attendants, and couriers—occupations understood as continuing, in a different register, her own work of accompanying people on the road. She is also honored among the patrons of the city of Pisa. The Catholic Church commemorates her as a virgin on 29 May.

Surviving evidence for her biography is limited and is filtered through later pious narrative rather than through contemporary administrative records. What can be said with confidence is that a Pisan woman of the later twelfth century, living as an Augustinian tertiary and never married, became famous for pilgrimage to Compostela and for care of fellow travelers, and that her memory has been continuously honored in her native city since the early thirteenth century. Precise claims about individual visions, miracles, or the exact circumstances of her eastern journey should be treated with caution; the outline of her life as virgin, tertiary, and pilgrim is the part of the tradition that has remained stable.
