Biography

Short Description

Saint Digna is commemorated in the Roman Martyrology as a Christian virgin martyr of Rome, honoured together with Saint Emerita on 22 September. The martyrology states that the two women suffered under the emperors Valerian and Gallienus in the mid-third century, that they were subjected to various torments, and that they were finally put to death by the sword. No contemporary passio, court record, or inscription supplies Digna’s parentage, the year of her birth, or the circumstances in which she embraced consecrated virginity. Later medieval retellings sometimes present Digna and Emerita as sisters and add miraculous episodes to their interrogation; those details are not found in the earliest liturgical notices and cannot be treated as historical fact.

The persecution associated with Valerian intensified after 257, first against the clergy and then more widely against Christians who refused the official cult. Rome itself produced many martyrs whose names entered local calendars that later fed the Roman Martyrology. Digna belongs to that large group of early Roman martyrs whose memory was kept in the liturgy even though almost every biographical particular has been lost. The title virgin in the martyrological entry indicates that the Roman church remembered her as an unmarried woman dedicated to Christ, not as a member of any later religious order.

Seventh-century pilgrim itineraries locate the tombs of Digna and Emerita in the cemetery (catacomb) of Commodilla on the Via Ostiensis, south of the city. That cemetery also held other martyrs, including Felix and Adauctus, and was a station on the routes followed by pilgrims visiting the graves of the Roman saints. In later centuries relics attributed to Digna and Emerita were translated to the church of San Marcello al Corso, which gave their cult a more accessible urban setting. No distinctive patronage of places, professions, or causes is securely attached to Digna in the principal directories of saints.

Like other martyrs of the first centuries, Digna was never the subject of a formal papal canonization. Her name entered the calendar through popular cult and episcopal recognition, the process later described as equivalent to canonization before that act was reserved to the Holy See. A different Saint Digna, a virgin recluse of Todi in Umbria, appears in the Roman Martyrology on 11 August; the two figures should not be confused. The present notice concerns the Roman virgin martyr of 22 September, about whom the historian can say little more than what the martyrology and the early itineraries preserve.
