Biography

Short Description

Saint Faith, known in Latin as Sancta Fides and in French as Sainte Foy, is venerated as a virgin martyr associated with Agen in Aquitaine, in what is now southwestern France. Later hagiography presents her as a young Christian girl arrested during a Roman persecution of Christians, a setting that medieval writers commonly placed in the late third or early fourth century. No contemporary record of her life survives, and the written passio is of later date. Modern historians therefore treat the narrative of her passion as legendary in its details, while accepting that an early martyr cult of a saint named Faith was established at Agen and became one of the notable martyr cults of Gaul.

According to the traditional legend, Faith refused to offer sacrifice to the pagan gods. She was tortured, most famously by means of a red-hot brazier or grill, and was finally beheaded. The story presents her as remaining steadfast, and her constancy is said to have led to the conversion of others, including Caprasius (Saint Caprais of Agen), who is also honored as a martyr of that city. Versions of the passio differ in incident and in the names of the officials involved. Because these texts were composed or elaborated well after the period they describe, they cannot be used as a precise chronology or as a reliable account of Roman judicial practice.

The cult at Agen is attested in late antiquity and the early Middle Ages. In the ninth century, monastic tradition holds that her relics were taken from Agen to the monastery of Conques in the Rouergue (now in Aveyron). This translation, often placed about 866 and described in the sources as a furtum sacrum, or holy theft, made Conques a major pilgrimage shrine. A celebrated gold statue-reliquary of the saint, seated and richly jeweled (the Majesté de Sainte-Foy), became the focus of devotion. In the early eleventh century Bernard of Angers compiled the Liber miraculorum sancte Fidis, a collection of miracle stories from the shrine that records healings, the freeing of prisoners, and other wonders attributed to her intercession. Conques also lay on a route connected with the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, which further spread her fame.

Her feast is kept on 6 October. She is invoked especially by pilgrims and by prisoners, in keeping with the character of the miracles recorded at Conques. Churches and places named Sainte-Foy or Santa Fe in France, Spain, and elsewhere reflect the diffusion of the cult. In art she appears as a young woman with a gridiron, palm, or sword, or in the distinctive seated form of the Conques majesté. She was not the object of a later papal canonization of the medieval or modern type; her veneration belongs to the ancient cult of martyrs, subsequently received into the martyrologies of the Western Church. Scholarship continues to distinguish this well-documented medieval cult from the largely legendary reconstruction of her passion.
