Biography

Short Description

Saint Justa, honoured in the liturgy as a virgin martyr and almost always commemorated together with her sister Saint Rufina, belongs to the early Christian memory of Roman Hispalis, the city now called Seville, in the province of Baetica in southern Hispania. The traditional passio presents the two sisters as women of modest means who lived by making and selling earthenware. They are described as Christians who remained unmarried and devoted themselves to their faith and to almsgiving. No contemporary inscription, consular date, or administrative record preserves Justa’s parentage or the year of her birth; later hagiography simply treats both sisters as natives of Seville. Their story is therefore known only through liturgical commemoration and through martyr acts composed well after the events they claim to describe.

The core of the legend is a conflict over pagan cult. According to the received narrative, vessels from the sisters’ workshop were demanded for the rites of a local festival associated with Venus or Adonis. Justa and Rufina refused to allow their pottery to be used in idolatrous worship and, in some versions of the tale, destroyed the wares intended for that purpose. They were arrested and brought before a governor named Diogenianus, who first tried to force them to recant and then had them tortured. The dialogues, named officials, and miraculous embellishments of the passio belong to the conventional language of late antique martyr literature and cannot be read as a verbatim transcript. What the tradition does preserve is a local conviction that two Christian women of Seville were put to death for refusing to take part in civic pagan worship, most often placed in the later third century.

In the standard account Justa died in prison from the effects of torture and privation, while Rufina was executed afterward, by beheading or by having her neck broken, according to variant tellings. Catholic reference works commonly assign the martyrdom to the year 287, during the reign of Diocletian but before the empire-wide edicts of 303; other summaries simply attach the sisters to the Diocletianic persecution in a looser way. Independent confirmation of the exact year does not survive. Their bodies were said to have been recovered by Christians of the city—sometimes a bishop named Sabinus is mentioned—and buried at Seville. From an early period the two were honoured jointly rather than as separate cults.

The cult of Justa and Rufina is firmly rooted in the church of Seville. They appear in the Hispano-Mozarabic tradition and in the Roman Martyrology on 19 July. Relics associated with them have long been kept at the cathedral of Seville, and they are the principal patron saints of the city and of its archdiocese. Because of their trade they are invoked as patrons of potters and of workers in ceramics. Later Sevillian piety also linked them with the protection of the Giralda, the cathedral bell tower, especially against storms. They have been a frequent subject of Spanish art, including paintings of the Seville school. Historians of early Spanish Christianity generally accept a historical kernel of two virgin martyrs of Hispalis, while treating the detailed speeches, miracles, and precise chronology of the passio as later literary elaboration rather than as recoverable biography.
