Biography
No historically verifiable biography can be reconstructed for the figure designated Virgins Tartulla. The name does not occur in the principal ancient martyrologies, including the Martyrologium Hieronymianum, the Roman Martyrology in its various recensions, or the Byzantine synaxaria. Critical editions of early Christian passiones and the collections assembled by the Bollandists likewise contain no entry that can be securely identified with this individual.
References to a virgin named Tartulla, if they exist at all, appear to be confined to highly localized or late medieval calendars whose historical value has not been established by modern scholarship. In the absence of contemporary or near-contemporary documentation, it is impossible to determine the century in which she may have lived, the region of the Roman Empire or later Christendom with which she was associated, or the circumstances of any martyrdom or holy death attributed to her.
Consecrated virginity was a recognized form of Christian asceticism from the second century onward, and many women so designated became the objects of cult. Yet the mere survival of a name accompanied by the title virgin does not constitute sufficient evidence for a historical narrative. Speculation about possible North African, Italian, or Hispanic origins would exceed the available data and has therefore been avoided.
Liturgical commemoration, patronage, and the details of any canonization or beatification process remain equally unattested in reliable sources. Future archival discoveries or the publication of unpublished legendaries might one day shed light on this obscure figure; until such evidence is forthcoming, the historian can only record the name and the traditional epithet of virginity.
