Biography

Short Description

Verdiana (also known as Viridiana, and in Italian as Santa Verdiana) was a Tuscan recluse and virgin saint of Castelfiorentino in the Valdelsa, south-west of Florence. Later hagiographical tradition dates her birth to 1182 and links her with the noble Attavanti family, sometimes giving her the baptismal name Virginia. Contemporary twelfth-century documentation for her parentage and childhood is lacking, and the Attavanti connection belongs to local legend rather than to records of her own lifetime. What the tradition consistently maintains is that she was a native of Castelfiorentino and that from an early age she was remembered for piety, austerity, and generosity toward the poor.

According to the medieval and early modern lives, she undertook a pilgrimage to the shrine of Saint James at Santiago de Compostela; some accounts add a visit to Rome. After returning to Tuscany she chose the life of an anchoress. A small cell was prepared adjoining the church of Saint Anthony (Sant'Antonio Abate) at Castelfiorentino, and she was enclosed there in the manner then common in Italian towns, living beside a church, receiving food through a window, and remaining withdrawn from ordinary social life. Tradition holds that she spent about thirty-four years in this reclusion, occupied with prayer, fasting, and penitential discipline.

The episode that dominates her legend concerns two snakes that entered the cell and remained with her. Hagiographers present the serpents as a trial of patience and charity: she is said to have fed them from her own scant provisions and to have endured their presence rather than drive them out. The motif, familiar from the lives of desert fathers and other recluses, became the core of her iconography. In Tuscan art she is typically shown as a veiled recluse accompanied by two snakes. Whatever historical experience, if any, lies behind the story, it shaped both her local cult and the way later generations pictured her.

She is reported to have died on 1 February 1242 and was buried at Castelfiorentino. Her tomb attracted popular devotion, and a sanctuary, the Santuario di Santa Verdiana, was in time built in her honor; her relics are associated with that church. She was not the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or Tridentine kind. Recognition of her sanctity rested on continuous local veneration and liturgical observance in the Florentine territory. Later writers sometimes numbered her among Franciscan tertiaries or associated her with Vallombrosan circles, but those affiliations are not securely documented for her lifetime. The most defensible historical description remains that of an independent urban recluse of thirteenth-century Tuscany. Her feast is kept on 1 February, and she is the patron saint of Castelfiorentino.
