Biography

Short Description

Vital-Justin Grandin was a French Roman Catholic missionary and bishop who played a central role in establishing the Church in western Canada during the second half of the nineteenth century. He was born in 1829 in the village of Saint-Pierre-sur-Orthe in the Mayenne department of northwestern France. After studies for the priesthood he entered the Congregation of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate and was ordained in 1854. That same year he left for the missions of British North America, arriving at Saint-Boniface on the Red River. He began work among Métis, First Nations, and the small European population of the settlement, traveling by canoe and dogsled and learning Indigenous languages in conditions of isolation and physical hardship.

In the late 1850s Grandin was named coadjutor to Bishop Alexandre-Antonin Taché of Saint-Boniface and was consecrated a bishop while still a young man. He was given particular charge of the enormous northern and western territories of the diocese. When Rome erected the Diocese of St. Albert in 1871, Grandin became its first bishop and made his residence at the existing Oblate mission of St. Albert, north of Fort Edmonton. From that see he directed the founding of missions, churches, convents, hospitals, and schools across much of present-day Alberta and parts of Saskatchewan, recruiting additional Oblates and communities of religious sisters from Europe and eastern Canada.

His long episcopate coincided with the collapse of the buffalo economy, the numbered treaties with First Nations, the North-West Rebellion of 1885, and the onset of large-scale agricultural settlement. Grandin repeatedly petitioned ecclesiastical and civil authorities for more priests and material resources. He was a strong advocate of residential and industrial schools for Indigenous children, regarding them as instruments of evangelization and of adaptation to a changing prairie economy. Subsequent historical study has been sharply critical of that policy and of the suffering experienced in many of the institutions he helped promote.

Despite chronic poor health and a slight physical stature, Grandin continued pastoral visitations of his vast diocese into old age. He died at St. Albert in 1902 and was buried there. A cause for his canonization was later introduced, and the Catholic Church declared him Venerable in recognition of heroic virtue. He remains a foundational, and in some respects controversial, figure in the Catholic history of the Canadian West.
