Biography

Short Description

Vitaliano di Osimo, known in Latin as Vitalianus and in English as Saint Vitalian of Osimo, was bishop of Osimo (ancient Auximum) in Picenum, in the Marche of central Italy. He is not to be confused with Pope Vitalian, who occupied the Roman see in the seventh century. Almost no contemporary documentation of Vitaliano’s life survives. He does not appear in dated synodal lists or in the surviving papal correspondence of the period, and the medieval vita that later circulated in his honour is of limited historical value. What can be stated with reasonable confidence is that he was a bishop of Osimo whose tomb became the centre of a local cult, that later tradition placed his episcopate in the first half of the eighth century, and that the Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 16 July as bishop of Osimo in Piceno.

Local tradition, followed by standard Italian hagiographical reference works, holds that he was a native of Osimo itself, born in the seventh century when the city still formed part of the Byzantine Pentapolis on the Adriatic. He is said to have entered the clergy of his own church and in time to have been chosen as its bishop. The years assigned to his pontificate coincide with a difficult phase in the history of the Marche, as Lombard pressure on the remaining Byzantine territories of the Exarchate of Ravenna intensified and the political geography of central Italy was being recast. Tradition describes him as a pastor marked by charity, care for the poor, and fidelity to his office, but these traits cannot be verified from authentic letters, charters, or chronicles. No reliable account of particular miracles, councils, or public acts can be attached to his name without repeating later legend.

He is traditionally said to have died in Osimo on 16 July 743, the date kept as his feast and treated in the sources as his dies natalis. His body was buried in the cathedral of Osimo, the church later known as the Cathedral of San Leopardo (now a co-cathedral of the Archdiocese of Ancona-Osimo). The relics have remained there through subsequent translations and canonical recognitions and continue to be venerated in the cathedral. The cult is of the ancient, pre-congregation type: Vitaliano was never the object of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or Tridentine kind. His public veneration was received by custom, recorded in martyrologies, and accepted by the diocesan church.

In Osimo he is honoured as a patron of the city, together with the earlier bishop Saint Leopardus, to whom the cathedral is dedicated. The feast on 16 July has long been observed in the local calendar. No other well-documented patronages of places, professions, or causes are securely attached to him. For the historian the solid core of the dossier remains modest: an eighth-century bishop of Osimo, a tomb that became a place of cult, and a feast fixed on 16 July. Legendary elaborations that grew up around that core in the later Middle Ages cannot be controlled by independent evidence and should be treated with caution.
