Biography

Short Description

Vitalis of Assisi (Italian: Vitale or San Vitale di Assisi) was a Benedictine monk and hermit of fourteenth-century Umbria. Tradition holds that he was born in 1295 at Bastia Umbra, a small town a few miles from Assisi, then in the Papal States. The surviving accounts of his life are late and hagiographical rather than contemporary. They describe his youth as disordered and given over to vice. At an unspecified moment he experienced a religious conversion, abandoned that way of life, and entered the Benedictine order in order to do penance.

As a monk he is said to have lived in more than one Benedictine house before embracing a solitary vocation. He eventually withdrew as a hermit to a site associated with Saint Benedict in the countryside near Assisi, where he passed the rest of his life in prayer, fasting, and austerity. Little else can be established with certainty about his daily observance or about any disciples he may have had. His later reputation rested on the memory of a converted sinner who persevered as a penitent hermit in the hills of Umbria.

Vitalis died on 31 May 1370. His remains were brought into Assisi and placed in the cathedral of San Rufino, the city’s ancient episcopal church, where they have continued to be venerated. He did not receive a formal papal canonization of the kind later required by the Holy See; his cult grew locally, and he has been commemorated on 31 May, especially in Assisi and Bastia Umbra. Popular devotion has long invoked him against maladies of the bladder and of the genitals, a patronage that later writers sometimes connected, whether historically or symbolically, with the sins of his youth.

Beyond these outlines the historical record is thin. Vitalis belongs to the large number of late medieval Italian hermits whose lives were preserved by local tradition and liturgical observance rather than by a substantial dossier of documents. His memory remains part of the religious landscape of Assisi, alongside far more famous Umbrian saints, and his relics in the cathedral have served as the principal focus of his cult.
