Biography

Short Description

Saint Vitalis of Milan is an early Christian martyr whose cult became one of the most prominent in late antique northern Italy, although almost every biographical particular about him derives from legend rather than from contemporary documents. Tradition describes him as a wealthy citizen of Milan, the husband of Saint Valeria and the father of the Milanese martyrs Saints Gervasius and Protasius. The principal narrative of his passion is preserved in the Latin Passio of Gervasius and Protasius and in related texts that circulated in late antiquity and the early Middle Ages. Those accounts supply no verifiable year of birth or death. Later martyrologies and popular calendars have placed his martyrdom variously in the first century, sometimes under Nero, or in the later second century, sometimes under Marcus Aurelius; such datings rest on hagiographical convention, not on independent historical evidence.

According to the received legend, Vitalis travelled from Milan to Ravenna in the company of a judge named Paulinus. There he encountered the physician Ursicinus of Ravenna, who was being tortured for the Christian faith and was close to apostasy. Vitalis encouraged him to persevere; after Ursicinus was beheaded, Vitalis recovered the body and buried it. For that act he was himself arrested, stretched on the rack, and buried alive in a pit filled with earth and stones. His wife Valeria, on her way back toward Milan, was attacked by pagans and died of her wounds, and is likewise venerated as a martyr. The sons Gervasius and Protasius were later said to have been martyred at Milan. Modern historians generally treat this family grouping as a literary construction that linked several independently venerated cults. Saint Ambrose of Milan famously uncovered the relics of Gervasius and Protasius in 386, while the association of those brothers with Vitalis appears to have been elaborated in subsequent passiones. Even Vitalis’s social rank is uncertain in the sources, which present him now as a soldier, now as a consular official, now simply as a prominent layman.

Whatever the historical kernel, veneration of Vitalis was firmly established at Ravenna by the fifth and sixth centuries. The great octagonal Basilica of San Vitale, begun under Bishop Ecclesius after 525 and consecrated in 547 or 548 by Archbishop Maximian, is one of the masterpieces of early Byzantine art in the West and was dedicated to this martyr. Its mosaic decoration, including the famous imperial panels of Justinian and Theodora, testifies to the prestige of the cult in Justinianic Ravenna. A church of San Vitale also existed in Rome from the fifth century as the titulus Vestinae, and Milan likewise honored the saint. Relics associated with Vitalis have been claimed at Ravenna and elsewhere; as with many early martyrs, the chain of custody of any particular relic is difficult to verify. Scholars have also noted that the Ravennate martyr and the Milanese father of Gervasius and Protasius may originally have been distinct figures later fused in legend.

In the Roman Martyrology his feast is kept on 28 April, often jointly with Valeria. The same date appeared in the General Roman Calendar until the revision of 1969, when the celebration was omitted from the universal calendar as being of primarily local importance, though it remains in the martyrology and in local usage, especially at Ravenna and Milan. Eastern calendars sometimes commemorate a Saint Vitalis on other days, and the name was borne by several distinct martyrs, which has produced occasional confusion in later compilations. Vitalis was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type; his cult belongs to the ancient, so-called pre-congregation veneration of martyrs. He is remembered as a layman rather than as a cleric or monk, and the legend emphasizes courage in encouraging a fellow Christian and the corporal work of burying the dead. What can be affirmed with some confidence is the antiquity and geographic range of his cult, its close ties to Milan and Ravenna, and the enduring artistic and liturgical legacy that grew up around his name from late antiquity onward.
