Biography

Short Description

Vitalis of Savigny, also known as Vital of Mortain, was a Norman priest, hermit, itinerant preacher, and monastic founder of the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries. He was born at Tierceville in the diocese of Bayeux, in the Duchy of Normandy, around the middle of the eleventh century; no contemporary source records an exact year of birth. After an education that prepared him for clerical life he was ordained and became a canon of the collegiate church of Saint-Évroult at Mortain. He later served as chaplain to Robert, Count of Mortain, half-brother of William the Conqueror. Life at that court exposed him to the wealth and worldliness of the Anglo-Norman aristocracy, an experience that later shaped his preaching against clerical and lay vice.

In the last decade of the eleventh century Vitalis left court and canonry for the eremitical life. He lived for a time among the hermits of the forest of Craon in Maine, a region that also sheltered Robert of Arbrissel and Bernard of Tiron, leading figures of the contemporary apostolic and monastic reform. From that base he undertook preaching tours through Normandy, Brittany, and Maine, calling clergy and laity to repentance. Contemporary accounts present him as an eloquent and austere preacher who did not hesitate to rebuke the powerful. His itinerant ministry belonged to the same wave of evangelical eremitism that produced Fontevraud, Tiron, and other new foundations of the period.

Around the beginning of the twelfth century Vitalis established a hermitage in the forest of Savigny, in the county of Mortain and the diocese of Avranches. With the patronage of Ralph of Fougères the settlement developed into a monastery dedicated to the Holy Trinity, of which Vitalis became the first abbot. The community observed a strict interpretation of the Rule of Saint Benedict and attracted numerous recruits. Under his leadership and that of his immediate successors the house generated a congregation of daughter monasteries in France, England, and the Channel Islands; English foundations included Furness and several others. The Savigniac observance combined Benedictine stability with the austerity associated with the newer reform orders of the age.

Vitalis died at Savigny on 16 September 1122 and was buried at the abbey he had founded. He was succeeded as abbot by Geoffrey, under whom the congregation continued to expand. In 1147, a generation after the founder’s death, the entire Congregation of Savigny was incorporated into the Cistercian Order. Vitalis was never the subject of a formal papal canonization in the later medieval sense, but he was venerated as a saint from an early date; his feast is kept on 16 September. His relics remained at Savigny Abbey until they were dispersed or lost during the French Revolution. Historical knowledge of his life depends chiefly on a twelfth-century vita and on the early records of the Savigniac houses; many precise details of his youth and inner life remain uncertain.
