Biography

Short Description

The Latin name Vitalis, meaning “of life” or “life-giving,” was borne by a large number of early Christian martyrs and later medieval holy men, especially in Italy, Gaul, and North Africa. The Wikidata entity Q18921055 has no corresponding Wikipedia article, and the notices preserved in martyrologies and local calendars are typically limited to a name, a place of martyrdom or burial, and a feast date. Under those conditions it is not possible to reconstruct a continuous, source-based biography that would satisfy ordinary historical standards.

Among the better-attested homonyms are Vitalis of Ravenna (or Milan), commemorated on 28 April and linked in later legend with Saint Valeria and the brothers Gervasius and Protasius; Vitalis and Agricola of Bologna, whose relics Saint Ambrose is said to have discovered in the late fourth century and whose feast is 4 November; Vitalis of Gaza, a sixth-century monk known from the Spiritual Meadow of John Moschus; and Vitalis of Savigny, the twelfth-century founder of the Savigniac congregation. Each of these figures generated a distinct hagiographical tradition, often written centuries after the events described and therefore of limited value for establishing a birth year, family circumstances, or even the precise manner of death.

For the particular individual recorded as Q18921055, no independent contemporary document—neither an authentic passio, nor an episcopal catalogue, nor a reliable account of a relic translation—has been identified that would permit the historian to assign a year of birth, a place of origin, or a definite year of death. Later liturgical books may preserve a feast day, yet such entries frequently conflate homonymous saints or rest on medieval inventions. Claims concerning marriage, children, religious profession, or specific patronages must therefore be left unasserted.

What can be said with confidence is that the cult of saints named Vitalis belongs to the broader early-medieval pattern of venerating martyrs whose very names were thought to guarantee the “life” of the Christian community. Churches, especially in northern Italy and in the former territories of the Exarchate of Ravenna, were dedicated to one or another Vitalis; mosaics, as at San Vitale in Ravenna, and relic translations, as at Bologna, kept the name in public memory. Beyond that liturgical and artistic afterlife, the biographical facts of the person designated Q18921055 remain, on present evidence, irrecoverable.
