Biography

Short Description

Saint Victricius, whose name also appears as Vitricius or in French as Victrice, served as bishop of Rouen (ancient Rotomagus) during the closing decades of the fourth century and the beginning of the fifth. Contemporary and near-contemporary sources do not record a precise place or date of birth. Later tradition, followed by many modern reference works, situates his birth in the early or middle fourth century, often around 330, within the Gallic provinces of the Roman Empire. Before his conversion he was a soldier. Once he became a Christian he declined to remain in military service; hagiographical narratives describe his subsequent arrest, flogging, and condemnation to death, from which he was nevertheless spared. He then turned to evangelization in the still incompletely Christianized districts of northern Gaul.

By the later fourth century Victricius had been chosen bishop of Rouen. In that office he labored to organize diocesan life, to found churches, and to promote the cult of the martyrs through the acquisition and veneration of relics. He is commonly linked with the pastoral and monastic circle surrounding Saint Martin of Tours, and he corresponded with or was known to Saint Paulinus of Nola. In or about 396 Victricius traveled to the island of Britain. The journey, unusual for a Gallic bishop, is attested in the writings of Paulinus and appears to have been undertaken at the request of British clergy, whether to settle disputes, to consecrate churches, or to address questions of discipline.

The same year, or shortly thereafter, Victricius composed De laude sanctorum, a homiletic treatise in praise of the saints. The occasion was the reception at Rouen of a collection of relics sent from Italy. The text is one of the earliest extended Latin reflections on the power of relics, the communion of saints, and the propriety of their cult, and it shows the influence of similar developments in Milan and Nola. Victricius also appears to have fostered monastic communities within his diocese, consistent with the Martinian model of episcopal support for ascetic life.

In the final years of his episcopate Victricius encountered resistance from some of his own clergy. He sought the support of the bishop of Rome, and a letter of Pope Innocent I written in 404 answers a series of disciplinary and liturgical questions posed by Victricius while affirming Roman usage. Victricius died at Rouen in the early fifth century; dates commonly given fall around 407 to 409. He was buried in his city and was honored as a saint from an early period. His feast is celebrated on 7 August. Surviving evidence for his career is limited, consisting chiefly of his own treatise, the papal letter of 404, and scattered notices in the correspondence of Paulinus of Nola; later medieval lives add legendary detail that cannot always be verified. Nonetheless, Victricius occupies a secure place in the history of the Gallic church as a missionary bishop, an early theorist of relic veneration, and a correspondent of the leading Latin churchmen of his generation.
