Biography

Short Description

Viventiolus (also spelled Vivientolus or Vivientol) was an early sixth-century Gallo-Roman bishop who occupied the metropolitan see of Lyon, then the chief city of the Burgundian kingdom in the Rhône valley. He is attested as the brother of Saint Rusticus, who had been Archbishop of Lyon at the close of the fifth century, and thus belonged to a senatorial family of Lugdunum whose members repeatedly held high civil and ecclesiastical office in late Roman and post-Roman Gaul. Such families supplied many of the bishops of the great Gallic cities after the imperial administration receded. Precise details of his birth are not preserved in contemporary documents; later tradition places his origin in the Lyon region in the second half of the fifth century, but no primary source records a verified year or place of birth.

Before he became bishop, Viventiolus is said to have lived as a monk at Condat Abbey in the Jura mountains, a community later known as Saint-Oyend and then Saint-Claude. Condat had been founded in the fifth century in the orbit of Lérins and the Jura fathers and represented the austere monastic current that shaped a number of Gallic prelates. Monastic credentials of this kind carried spiritual authority when a monk was called to an urban cathedral. Viventiolus was elevated to the archbishopric of Lyon about 514, succeeding Bishop Stephanus. Lyon remained a metropolitan church with a long Christian past going back to the martyrs of 177, and its bishop ranked among the principal Catholic leaders in a kingdom whose royal house had only recently moved from Arianism to Catholic Christianity.

The defining public act of his episcopate was the Council of Epaone, held in 517. Together with Avitus of Vienne, the other metropolitan of the Burgundian realm, Viventiolus gathered some two dozen bishops. King Sigismund, a Catholic convert and founder of the monastery of Agaune (Saint-Maurice), provided the political setting for a synod meant to restore discipline after generations of Arian rule. The canons of Epaone treated clerical conduct, prohibited incestuous and irregular marriages, regulated church property, and restricted social intercourse with heretics. A letter of Viventiolus relating to the convocation of the council survives among the documents of the Burgundian church and shows him acting as a metropolitan who expected attendance from his suffragans. Correspondence of Avitus of Vienne likewise situates Viventiolus among the leading Catholic bishops of the kingdom.

Viventiolus died in the mid-520s; liturgical tradition assigns his death to 12 July, and the year 524 is the date commonly given in later sources. His last years coincided with the collapse of Burgundian independence, as Frankish kings made war on Sigismund and Godomar. He was venerated as a saint in the church of Lyon, and his feast is kept on 12 July. No medieval vita of any length has come down, and he left no extensive theological corpus; knowledge of him therefore rests on conciliar acts, a handful of letters, episcopal lists, and the martyrological tradition. He remains a representative figure of the Gallo-Roman episcopate that mediated between the old senatorial world, monastic asceticism, and the new Germanic Catholic monarchies of sixth-century Gaul.
