Biography

Short Description

Vladimir Ambartsumovich Ambartsumov was born on 1 September 1892 in Grozny, then a town in the Terek Oblast of the Russian Empire, into an Armenian family. His father, Ambartsum Yakovlevich Ambartsumov, worked as a civil employee. The family later lived in Moscow, where Vladimir received a gymnasium education and in 1911 entered the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of Moscow University, completing his studies in 1917. During his student years he took part in the Russian Student Christian Movement. For a time he was associated with the Evangelical Christian movement around Ivan Prokhanov and served as a preacher in those circles, a path not uncommon among educated Russians seeking a living Christian faith in the early twentieth century.

In 1918 he married Valentina Alexandrovna. The couple had several children. In the course of the 1920s his convictions led him from evangelical Protestantism into the Russian Orthodox Church. In 1927 he was ordained deacon and then priest; accounts of his life attribute the ordination to Bishop Bartholomew (Remov), a Moscow vicar who later died in Soviet imprisonment. As a married parish priest of the Moscow diocese, Father Vladimir served in churches of the capital during the years when the Soviet state was closing parishes and arresting clergy. He was remembered as an educated pastor who sought to minister to students and to members of the scientific intelligentsia, drawing on his own university training.

Conditions for church life worsened sharply in the 1930s. On 8 September 1937, at the height of the Great Terror, he was arrested in Moscow by the NKVD and charged with counter-revolutionary activity, a standard accusation against clergy. An NKVD troika sentenced him to death without a public trial. On 5 November 1937 he was shot at the Butovo firing range south of Moscow, one of the principal secret-police execution grounds of 1937–1938, and was buried in the unmarked mass graves on that site, together with thousands of other victims, among them many Orthodox clergy and laity.

After the opening of Soviet repressive archives, the Russian Orthodox Church proceeded to the glorification of the New Martyrs and Confessors. Vladimir Ambartsumov was numbered among them as a hieromartyr by the Jubilee Bishops’ Council of the Russian Orthodox Church in August 2000. He is commemorated on 5 November, the date of his death, as well as with the Synaxis of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia and with the assembly of those shot at Butovo. A memorial church now stands at the former firing range. The outline of his life rests on investigative files, family testimony, and the hagiographical notices prepared for canonization; some particulars of his early evangelical work and of the exact sequence of Moscow parishes he served remain known only in outline.
