Biography

Short Description

Vladimir Nikolaevich Vorobyov was born in 1941 in Moscow, then the capital of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic within the Soviet Union. He came from a family of the Soviet scientific intelligentsia and received a secular education in the physical sciences rather than an early church schooling. He studied at the Faculty of Physics of Moscow State University and later completed postgraduate work, obtaining the degree of candidate of physical and mathematical sciences. For a number of years he worked as a researcher, a path typical of the post-war technical intelligentsia, before turning more fully toward the life of the Russian Orthodox Church.

During the 1970s, while the Soviet state still restricted public religious practice, Vorobyov undertook theological studies through the Moscow Theological Seminary and the Moscow Theological Academy, following the external course then open to some laypeople. He was ordained to the diaconate and then to the priesthood toward the end of that decade and thereafter served in Moscow. In time he became rector of the Church of Saint Nicholas in Kuznetsy, a historic parish in the Zamoskvorechye district of Moscow. That church had remained a working parish through much of the Soviet period and later became closely tied to the educational work with which his name is most often associated.

After the easing and then collapse of Soviet restrictions on the Church in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Vorobyov took a leading part in restoring Orthodox higher education in Russia. In 1992 he became rector of the newly founded Saint Tikhon's Orthodox Theological Institute in Moscow, established with hierarchical blessing and with the participation of clergy and lay scholars who had kept theological learning alive under difficult conditions. The institute later received university status and is known as Saint Tikhon's Orthodox University of the Humanities. As rector he oversaw the growth of faculties in theology, church history, philology, education, and related fields, and the training of both clergy and lay specialists. The university became one of the principal centers of Orthodox academic life in the post-Soviet period.

Vorobyov has also been involved in the ecclesiastical and scholarly recovery of the memory of the New Martyrs and Confessors of the Russian Church, including archival research, publication, and materials connected with their glorification. He holds the rank of mitred archpriest and the academic standing of candidate of theology and professor. His public role has combined parish priesthood, university administration, and participation in the educational and historical work of the Moscow Patriarchate. He has not held episcopal, patriarchal, or papal office, and he is a living clergyman of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries rather than a canonized saint; he therefore has no feast day or official hagiographical patronages.
