Biography

Short Description

The name Vladimir Vvedensky belongs to several Orthodox clergymen of the Russian Empire and the early Soviet period, and the Wikidata item Q4105617 designates one of them. English-language reference works and even many Russian sources do not always keep these homonymous priests distinct, so a responsible account must begin by acknowledging that uncertainty. The surname itself is a typical clerical name, derived from churches dedicated to the Presentation of the Mother of God (Vvedenie vo khram Presvyatoi Bogoroditsy), and it was borne by families that had served the Church for generations in the central guberniyas of European Russia.

Men of this name in the late nineteenth century ordinarily received their formation in a theological seminary, were ordained to the diaconate and then the priesthood, and were assigned to parish churches or, less often, to teaching posts in church schools. As members of the so-called white clergy they were expected to marry before ordination; monastic clergy (the black clergy) took a different path and a different name in religion. Without a unique identifying record it is not possible to say which of these paths the subject of Q4105617 followed, nor to name a specific diocese or parish.

The generation of priests who came of age before 1917 lived through the disestablishment of the Orthodox Church, the Civil War, the confiscation of church valuables, and the successive waves of arrests that accompanied the Soviet anti-religious campaigns of the 1920s and 1930s. Numerous priests named Vladimir Vvedensky appear in the investigative files of the OGPU and NKVD, charged with counter-revolutionary agitation or membership in mythical monarchist organizations. Some died in prison or in the camps; others were shot. Several have been included in the Sobor of New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia glorified by the Russian Orthodox Church.

Because the present identifier does not by itself supply a birth register, a service record, or a unique martyrdom date, fields such as year of birth, place of death, and a personal feast day cannot be filled without the risk of attributing one man's life to another. What remains historically secure is the broader pattern: a parish priest of central Russia, formed in the imperial seminary system, who shared the fate of thousands of clergy under Soviet rule. Further precision would require consultation of the original diocesan archives or the published synodal lives of the new martyrs, where the several Vladimir Vvedenskys are distinguished by patronymic, place of last service, and date of execution or death in custody.

The collective memory of these priests is kept in the Russian Orthodox Church's commemoration of the New Martyrs, whose common feast is observed on the Sunday nearest 25 January (Old Style) or 7 February (New Style), as well as on the individual days assigned to each glorified martyr. Until the specific person behind Q4105617 can be matched to one of those published lives, the most honest biographical statement is that he belongs to that cloud of witnesses rather than to a fully documented single vita.
