Biography

Short Description

Volusianus, also known as Volusian and in French as Volusien, was a Gallo-Roman cleric of senatorial family who became the seventh bishop of Tours in the later fifth century. He succeeded Saint Perpetuus, whose long episcopate had ended around the beginning of the 490s, and he is known almost entirely from the historical and episcopal notices of Gregory of Tours, writing in the following century. Gregory characterizes him as a man of senatorial birth and of great holiness. Attempts to link him genealogically with other Aquitanian senatorial houses, such as that of Ruricius of Limoges, remain conjectural.

His years as bishop coincided with the last phase of Visigothic rule in the Loire country. Tours then belonged to the kingdom of the Arian Visigoths, whose king Alaric II faced the growing power of the Frankish king Clovis after the latter's conversion to Nicene Christianity. Gregory reports that the Goths suspected Volusianus of planning to deliver the city to the Franks. The bishop was therefore seized, taken to Toulouse, and afterwards sent into Spain, where he died in exile. Standard reconstructions of the Tours episcopal list place the end of his tenure, and his death, about the year 498, after roughly seven years in office. Gregory does not present him as a blood martyr, but as a Nicene bishop who perished far from his see under political constraint.

No contemporary biography survives, and almost nothing is recorded of his birth, education, or pastoral government beyond the fact of his exile. After his death the see of Tours passed to Verus. The memory of Volusianus was preserved in the Church of Tours and entered medieval martyrologies. He is commemorated on 18 January. From the Middle Ages a cult at Foix in the Pyrenees identified him as that town's patron and claimed his relics for the church of Saint-Volusien; modern historians treat the Foix tradition with reserve, because Gregory locates the bishop's death in Spain and does not mention a later translation. Volusianus belongs to the large number of late antique Gallic bishops whose sanctity was recognized by local cult rather than by any later process of papal canonization.

The only substantial early source is Gregory of Tours, both in his Ten Books of Histories and in the catalogue of the bishops of Tours associated with that work. Later medieval legend, especially in the county of Foix, elaborated a passion in which Volusianus was beheaded; that narrative is not supported by Gregory and is generally regarded as hagiographical expansion. Despite the thinness of the documentary record, Volusianus remains an important illustration of the predicament of Nicene bishops living under Arian Visigothic authority on the eve of the Frankish conquest of Aquitaine.
