Biography

Short Description

Edmé Félix Alfred Vulpian was a French physician, physiologist, and neurologist of the nineteenth century, born in Paris in 1826. He trained in medicine in the French capital, where hospital internships and the Faculty of Medicine formed the usual path into scientific medicine. He belonged to the generation that combined bedside observation in the great Paris hospitals with laboratory experiment, and he spent his career in that city’s medical and scientific institutions rather than in a religious order or ecclesiastical office. He is not a saint, bishop, or cult figure; his reputation rests on physiology and neurology.

Vulpian’s research covered the physiology of the nervous system, the action of poisons such as curare, vasomotor innervation, cranial-nerve function, and the pathology of the spinal cord and brain. He worked with Jean-Martin Charcot at the Salpêtrière; together they published observations that helped establish multiple sclerosis as a distinct clinical and pathological condition. He described a form of progressive muscular atrophy later associated with his name (sometimes called Vulpian–Bernhardt atrophy) and investigated the adrenal medulla and substances that affect blood pressure, work that belongs to the prehistory of endocrine physiology. His method was experimental as well as clinical, and he helped implant laboratory neurology in French academic medicine beside Charcot’s more purely clinical school.

He held chairs at the Paris Faculty of Medicine, including pathological anatomy and experimental pathology, and served as dean of the faculty. He was also connected with the Muséum national d’histoire naturelle, succeeding Pierre Flourens in comparative physiology. Election to the Académie des sciences and the Académie de médecine marked his standing among French scientific elites of the later nineteenth century. He continued to teach and publish on neurological and physiological subjects until the end of his life.

Vulpian died in Paris in 1887. His name survives in medical eponyms and in histories of French neurology and experimental physiology. No verified feast day, patronage, beatification, or canonization attaches to him, and reliable sources do not supply a documented spouse, children, or burial place for the purposes of this record.
