Biography

Władysław Błądziński was a Polish Roman Catholic priest of the Congregation of Saint Michael the Archangel, known as the Michaelites. He was born on 6 January 1908 in the village of Myślatycze in eastern Galicia, then a province of the Austro-Hungarian Empire; after the First World War the district belonged to the restored Polish state. He entered the Congregation of Saint Michael the Archangel, a community founded in the late nineteenth century by Blessed Bronisław Markiewicz for the education and care of poor, orphaned, and neglected youth. After religious formation and theological study he was ordained to the priesthood in the years before the Second World War and served in the congregation’s pastoral and educational works in Poland.

The Michaelites conducted schools, orphanages, and institutes for young people, and it was in that apostolate that Błądziński exercised his ministry. After the German invasion of Poland in 1939 the occupation authorities closed Polish secondary schools and universities and tightly restricted Polish cultural and religious life. Many clergy and religious responded by taking part in tajne nauczanie, the clandestine network of secret schooling. Błądziński’s involvement in forbidden education, together with his public identity as a Catholic priest, exposed him to arrest by the German security police.

In 1944 he was seized by the Gestapo, imprisoned, and deported to the Gross-Rosen concentration camp in Lower Silesia, then inside the German Reich. Gross-Rosen was a forced-labour camp with a high death rate from starvation, exhaustion, and brutality. Błądziński died there on 8 September 1944. The Catholic Church later judged that he had been killed in odium fidei, in hatred of the faith, and therefore honours him as a martyr. Because he perished in a camp and because wartime destruction scattered personal papers, many details of his family background and day-to-day assignments survive only in outline in congregational and martyrological records.

Pope John Paul II beatified him on 13 June 1999 in Warsaw, together with 107 other Polish victims of Nazi and Soviet persecution between 1939 and 1945. The group is known as the 108 Blessed Polish Martyrs of the Second World War; their collective liturgical memorial is kept on 12 June. Błądziński has not been canonized. He is venerated as a blessed of the Catholic Church and as one of the priest-martyrs of the Michaelite congregation.
