Biography

Short Description

Władysław Bukowiński was born on 22 December 1904 in Berdychiv (Polish: Berdyczów), then in the Russian Empire and now in Ukraine, into a Polish family. After the restoration of Polish independence he pursued studies in Kraków, first in law at the Jagiellonian University and then in theology in preparation for the priesthood. He was ordained a priest on 28 June 1931 by Archbishop Adam Stefan Sapieha of Kraków. In the years that followed he served as a diocesan priest in the Archdiocese of Kraków, working in parish ministry and as a catechist and educator rather than as a member of a religious order.

In the later 1930s he was assigned to pastoral work in the Diocese of Łuck in Volhynia, in Poland’s eastern borderlands, a region of mixed Polish, Ukrainian, and other populations. The Second World War brought successive Soviet and German occupations and great suffering to those territories. Bukowiński continued his priestly ministry under occupation. When the war ended and the eastern lands were incorporated into the Soviet Union, he chose to remain with the faithful instead of leaving for postwar Poland.

In 1945 Soviet authorities arrested him and sentenced him to a long term of forced labor in the Gulag. He spent roughly a decade in camps, including sites associated with the Urals and Kazakhstan, under the harsh conditions of the camp system. Released in the mid-1950s, he was confined to residence in Kazakhstan, where large numbers of Poles, Germans, Ukrainians, and others had been deported or resettled. He resumed pastoral work among these scattered communities, often traveling great distances to celebrate Mass and the sacraments in private homes and improvised settings. He was arrested again in the late 1950s and imprisoned for a further term, then released around 1961.

Thereafter he obtained the legal status needed to remain in the Soviet Union and devoted the rest of his life to Catholic communities in Kazakhstan and Central Asia. He became known for a simple, impoverished way of life and for tireless care of people of many nationalities uprooted by Stalinist deportations. Years in the camps had damaged his health. He died in Karaganda on 3 December 1974. He is commonly remembered as the Apostle of Kazakhstan.

A reputation for holiness under persecution led to the opening of his cause. Pope Francis authorized his beatification, which was celebrated in Karaganda on 11 September 2016. He has not been canonized. His liturgical memorial is observed on 3 December, the anniversary of his death.
