Biography
Władysław Demski was a Polish Roman Catholic priest, educator, and martyr of the Nazi persecution during the Second World War. He was born on 5 August 1884 in the village of Straszewo in Pomerania, then under Prussian administration in the German Empire. Raised in a Polish Catholic family during the partitions of Poland, he studied for the priesthood at the seminary of the Diocese of Chełmno in Pelplin and was ordained in 1910. He combined parish ministry with work as a teacher, promoting Polish language, Catholic formation, and national culture in a region long subject to Germanization.
After Poland regained independence in 1918, Demski continued as a priest and educator, including teaching in Grudziądz, and entered public life. He was elected a deputy to the Sejm of the Second Polish Republic, representing Catholic and patriotic concerns in parliament. His interwar activity belonged to a wider pattern among Pomeranian clergy who joined pastoral work to education and civic service in the restored Polish state.
Following the German invasion of Poland in September 1939, occupation authorities targeted Polish clergy and civic leaders. Demski was arrested in the autumn of 1939, held in local prisons and camps that included Stutthof, and transferred to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp near Oranienburg. Camp accounts describe his refusal to abandon his priestly identity, including remaining in his cassock, for which he was brutally beaten. He died in Sachsenhausen on 28 May 1940 from that violence and the camp’s conditions.
Pope John Paul II beatified him in Warsaw on 13 June 1999 among the 108 Martyrs of World War II, Polish clergy and laity killed under Nazi occupation for their faith and national identity. The group is commemorated on 12 June. Blessed Władysław Demski is remembered as a pastor, teacher, and parliamentary deputy who sealed his witness with martyrdom rather than discard the signs and duties of the priesthood.
